Games: Boiled down to the bones
No this isn''t a request for sick games...
I''m wondering if we could make more games which take some of the basic ''gameplay'' types and make lots of little games out of them, while using a simple interface. (Ie. A big collection of small mini-games).
Ie. First game, bat and ball = Pong.
Next game, penalty shoot out (catch the ball, same controls as bat and ball except with dive button).
Next game, dodge the invaders. Like Space Invaders, move left and right to dodge the missiles.
As you can see in many games, the gameplay is very similar just with a few subtle differences.
All the games would be quick and fun with cool graphics.
So ... what''s your point?

When it comes down to it a lot of our old games are based on similar gameplay mechanisms, and have similar input. Having recently played Bishi Bashi Special a game that provides about 80 weird, timed mini-games that concentrate on different abilities, I wonder how well this can be done. I''ve also heard good things about Wario Ware which provides 200 "micro"games.
One trick developers use for interfaces and control patterns is to mimick them from older, "well-liked" games. It makes picking up and playing easier, which gives people fewer reasons to put it down early because it''s - too complex/not fun from the start.
