You should check out Black and White. It has a lot of the features that you describe here, it wasn''t as good as it was aiming for though. I think the technology was good, but the game design was rather boring.

To answer Oluseyis original question, as has been said before, it was done fairly successfully in both The Sims and Black&White, and in fact, I disliked both games because they provided too _much_ direct control; having to shuffle around food/wood and telling the villagers what to build etc...I would have preffered just giving the villagers some "nudges" in the right direction. Same with The Sims, I hated having to babysit them all the time, it would have been much better if they had a mind of their own and you could influence certain choices and see what the outcome would be.

On the other hand, which us probably quite obvious, it completely depends on what kind of game it is. I remember playing a RTS some years ago where you _did_ gave the units direct orders, but they didn''t always do what you told them, which was VERY frustrating.
