Visual C++ and OS
Hi peoplewere..
I have a question..
Im using windows 2K now and recent instaled Visual C++ 6.
I downloaded directxSDK 7a and I see two problems,
some sources can''t run because access violation or memory
error, this problem can be caused from Windows 2k? this
problem shold be look in windows 98 or ME?
P.S. what the best OS to develop engines with VC6?
thanks

well the problem is
2k is the new version of NT... NT can only run DX apps up to version 3(with SP3 with out DX 2 if I remember right)...
I use 98 I haven''t got ME on mine but a friend of mine has it and things work well on it... ME is the new version 98....
so I''d say use ME... unless you just want to develop for DX 3... but alot has changed between ver 3 and 7 =)

How about Visual C++ 6.0 + OpenGL + Windows 2000. Im thinking of switching over to Windows2000.
Uh, Windows 2000 has supported DirectX 7.0 since early betas. Windows 2000 will also support future versions of DirectX (Such as DirectX 8.0).
Windows 2000 is the preferred development environment for software development (That includes Game Development).

WinNT4 has Dx5 support with SP4 or 5(I''ve played Starcraft on a lapton running NT)
Win2000 has Dx7 support as mentioned above.
Access violation could mean lots of things (well lots of thing could cause it, it only means one thing - you poked a hole that didn''t want a pokin'' ) Trying playing a Dx7 based game and see if it gives you access violations. If it does, go find new video card drivers - this is one instance where betas might be the way to go... If they just plain don''t run, install manufactor drivers. The video drivers that come with 2k do not have _any 3D support and very limited DD support.
They demo Dx programs you ran probably did not enumerate the devices and/or check for errors correctly. Or the programs were shit and don''t work at all - which is a very real & likely possibility.
...
I develop solely on NT & 2000 machines.
OpenGL works in 9x/NT/2k and I can''t imagine it not working in ME
Those you who hate the shitty stability of 9x & lack of features in NT will like 2000 very much, especially with laptops *I can FINALY swap my disk drive & CD-ROM drive without locking up the laptop*
Getting 2000 to a stable point took a little twiddling with video card drivers & acceleration settings... but I have it working quite well on three machines with some different hardware (two AMD desktops an Athelon a K6-3, TNT2 & TNT, SB Live! & Diamond s90, NICs, one intel laptop (only a pentium) with some S3 derivative video card & some crappy ESS integrated sound card, 2k has a whole bunch of laptop bells&whistles that NT lacked but 9x had) I had the most trouble with the TNT2 in the Athelon, ended up disabling mouse cursor acceleration... bizzare, but it works fine now. I have a developer''s edition and haven''t install any OS updates...
