New idea for a game. you like?

I think it''s a great idea! I''m totally biased, of course, because I''m in the throes of trying to design something just like it!
I hate level-based games that tell you what to do. I play games because I want freedom and escape from my worldly limits. But what kind of freedom do you get if you''re always being told to go kill X, or deliver Y to Z? NONE! I want an open ended world which has a few rules I can learn but doesn''t force me into some lame, die-repeat, die-repeat gameplay.
Open ended games have been successful in the past: Look at the Starflight or Starcontrol series of games, or the venerable Elite. I think for a game like this to work a few things need to be designed in:
1) Player always has to have something interesting to do. Boredom''s a fact of life in the real world, but a sin in a game
2) Player should always be able to grow. This creates a sense of progress and combats pointless wandering.
3) There should always be something to work toward, preferably some greater goal (save the universe, defeat the armies of darkness, whatever)
4) There should be a lot of mini-goals that are worth taking on. I must stress that these should be 100% optional!!!
5) Success and failure shouldn''t always be binary. This is where I think most games are SO lame. If you try to overthrow the king and fail, for instance, most games put up some stupid automatic defeat screen. A better alternative, though, would be to, say, put a price on the player''s head and force him to run for his life! This would create the illusion of a real world.
These kind of games can be cool if you get the mix right. I think too many gamers have been weaned on level-based games of late, though, so an idea like this wouldn''t sell as much as the top-ten of today. But if you made it, chances are good that I''d buy it!

Oh yeah, one more thought: I DO NOT think a game like this HAS to be a massively multiplayer online game. MMOG''s are cool, but I''d really shoot for simply multiplayer, myself. Why? MMOG''s can often kill one of the really important things you''re trying to create: the sense of a real world. If you go for single or multiplayer, tho'', you''re more likely to have control over the environment and players will be able to play only with people like themselves.

Why do people play games in the first place? To get away from real life temporarily and have fun doing something. If real life were interesting enough to make a game out of then who would ever play games?
Like the idea whwere mini goals in the game isnt always success or failure. One game series I liked alot was the Quest for Glory, where you slowly advanced, and became stronger.

If one gets the balance correct one could make a very interresting game. Take for example a game placed in the dark ages, where the ultimated goal was to become the ruler of the land. Here you could leave the option to the player on how to do it, like he could build up an force and try to take it by pure force, or he could i.e. try to became rich and get political power.

Would like to see more of thees games in the future.

just wanted to say that a game really needs a good story..but whats more important is a very varying gameplay, i.e. lots of different objects, characters, models, levels, programming your own racing car-settings(like nascar), random weather, random enemies....

just play Doom or something similar and you''ll see that everytime you start a level the enemies stand behind the same corner anytime and wait for you to kick your ass, the same goodies lying around anytime, the same player-damage ( 5% when running around in nuke-stuff,...), and so forth....

so, just use more rand() !!!!
