What is GOOD Game Play?
Hello everyone.
I am submitting a game project to my college.
The problem here, is that my college keep on mentioning i need to have good game play.
No matter how good my graphics is, how good my storyline is and how good my audio, but lack of game play, it is just a normal game?
Okay! Until now, i only know 2 game plays:
a) just say in level 1 - 5 minutes to kill a bad guy, if i manage to kill the bad guy, i will go to level 2. If i did not manage to kill the bad guy within 5 minutes, i had to run back.. mission fail.. but it will direct me to level 2-1.
b) very good AI oriented game
These are the 2 thing i can think of. But not sure whether it is a game play or game design?
So can anyone share some comments here, and give some examples, what is a good game play is?
Please help! I am confuse for sometime. So finally i come back to here.
"I feel Warcraft 3 is a good game, but many people think that Warcraft 3 does not had a good game play? Why?"
Thank you.

Enjoyable player control, nice feedback screen-wise and sound-wise
Search ability (open crates to find powerups, whatever)
Secret areas for replayability
Power advancement of some sort to take on tougher opponents
Steady progression of difficulty, variety of challenges and situations
Multiple modes of dealing with challenges (several weapons or versions of attacks, etc.)
Player's control impacts environment's effects on player (use block when attacked to reduce damage or prep character's equipment to absorb damage, etc.)

It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.
How to do things when.
"How to..." -all your weapons, skills, magical powers, health systems have to be original/perfect/old.
"...do things..." -the funfactor of your objectives.
"...when." -is your game liniear? or is it a world full of sidequests? different endings? different races?

I always happened to like games that didn''t always play the same when you played them. Like selectable storylines or something of the like. Random things, too. Replayability falls in to play here, too...

Oh.. hidden treasures are also counted as game play...
I didnt notice that! I thought it is just a component of a game...
Hmm.. just say i manage to do those stuff, but my treasures are in a very lousy graphics, do you still play it?
Any more tips on game play?
Thanks.

I was just suggesting some things that might add some dimension to what you already have.
A variety of enjoyable challenges with a flow between them that makes sense is part of what I think comprises a well composed game.

Good game play to me means an enjoyable experience. Something you can get lost in. It also must feature tight controls. Too many games today have horrible camera''s or control that leaves much to be desire (sacrifice is a good example of this). Having to fight the control system does to my gaming experience what a bucket of ice water does to a sleeping person''s dreaming experience. A lot of what makes a game fun for me is having my in-game avatar tensed, poised, ready to accept my every command. Having that plasma cannon on his arm, or that squad of elven archers on the battlefield react like an extension of my body really puts me into the experience and gets me lost in the game. Tight controls alone aren''t going to do it, though. The game must reward critical thinking skills, strategy, and committment. I want to feel as though my mind is doing the work, not my thumbs. So what makes for good game play? Maximum fun, minimum frustration.
Good luck!
Hope this rant helped.

Without order nothing can exist - without chaos nothing can evolve.
You mean in the game i can allow the players to customize their own keyboard settings?
Well, thanks for the suggestion.. i will try my best to implement it..
Wow.. i didn''t know that my game is lack of so much game play...
Haha! I still accept more info on game play...
Does AI increase game play too?
Thanks a lot.
