Live Orchestra for Games!
Hiya Gamedev.net forum members!
This is Scott from SpaceOpera Studios. I''m just announcing the launch of our services . . . our unique services, to the game industry.
We are a music and audio production studio dedicated to live orchestral soundtracks for games. We are the only studio in the world with an in-house, live symphony orchestra. Our composers handle all aspects of live score production including composition, orchestration, conducting, and recording. For those of you out there seeking a film-quality soundtrack for your game or project, get in touch with us! We''re currently seeking contracts!
Check out our site at www.spaceoperastudios.com and see what we''re all about. Feel free to email us; you can find our contact info under the "Contact" tab at our site.
If anyone''s got any opinions about live scores for games, feel free to post ''em, we love to see what gamers and developers think!

Completely exciting! I hope to see great works coming from your studio. Best of luck. Are you represented within the AudioGANG?(Not sure if you''ve posted there recently, been a bit delinquent in keeping up on the forums over there!)
If not, please look into it, a great many people would be happy to see your team represented there. www.audiogang.org

Thanks for the encouragement; we''re really excited too and eager to raise the bar in game audio.
Already planning on joining GANG; it''s a great org. We''re just hanging back until we close on a couple contracts first so we can formally join at the pro level on their site. Spread the word!

Could you put up some demos that are actually played by a real orchestra? I''d be interested in hearing some.
Hey Sil,
We haven't released any recordings with our orchestra yet; we will be doing a summer concert series as well as recording demos/contracts this summer.
If you just want to hear any old orchestra recording though, I'd be happy to upload something to my site and post a link. Were you just wanting to compare sampled to live?

Ok, here''s some links. We''re excited about live orchestra for games because there''s a human energy and freedom of expression that you get from live performance that a sampled score will never have. It''s a necessary step in the industry to propel games into the same playing field as film. (Personally, I think interactive entertainment is going to overtake film eventually anyways.) (grin)

This is an old live recording of my college orchestra playing a slower concert work I wrote. Not pro level, but ok.
Link 2: www.scottbmorton.com/goldenthal_excerpt.mp3
This is from the movie Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within. Credits to Elliot Goldenthal. (He''s a wonderful composer.)
Link 3: www.scottbmorton.com/arcanum.mp3
This is a title track to Ben Houge''s "Arcanum" game soundtrack. It''s a string quartet and very intimate in expression. It would be nearly impossible to match this kind of soloistic expression with samples.
Enjoy; in a few months we''ll have some music posted either from one of our projects or from demos we do with our orchestra.

Your concert work is great! It reminds me of Vaughan Williams to an extent. It has an English folk melody flavor to it, which is always nice.
Also, you''re right. Goldenthal is a great composer. I extracted the isolated score from the Final Fantasy DVD to listen to away from the movie and its up there with my all time favorite film scores along with his Titus and Michael Collins.
Soon I''ll be entering the music program at Queen''s University in order to learn more about composing, orchestration, and conducting. I''ve already managed to create my own orchestral mock-ups having used Gigastudio for 2 years now and MIDI for almost 7. It will be interesting to see how your studio does in the gaming business as I am also aiming to one day score for games (as well as television and films) using a full orchestra.
I guess the best example of the kind of score for a game I’d like to compose is like what Lennie Moore did for Outcast. My opinion is that short and simple works like what Jeremy Soule composes are not where orchestral game music should be heading, but rather long drawn-out pieces like your concert work. I look forward to hearing more recordings from you.

that ROCKS! I really like your track sonic, that sounded like its from a movie. Do you also do movie stuff? Its sounds like something from a disney movie. I saw something about your studio on music4games.net, you guys sound like you are really organized.
Good luck with everything and keep us posted!

Thanks for the compliments; I surely will keep you posted! =)
And nope, haven''t done any movies yet. It would be a fun experience if I ever got the chance, but games are my main area of focus. It''s a budding art form and I have a lot of dreams about where game music could go. =)
Have a great weekend.
