Yah..i hear Tobal was a role playing game. But i have played Ehrgiez, they really tried...but squaresoft is not known for its fighting games, and in my opinion it was horrible. I guess you could say i want to make a better version of ehrigeiz.

A state of the art fighting game.

The thing I dislike about experience is that the xp decides the outcome, not the players'' individual skill.
Not entirly. Diablo 2 for example. Yes, there was the experiance, but then skills came into play with a tree structure. This then governed which skills you had the ability to get and how powerful the skills were. Then, it was up to the player to use the skill skillfully .

Tobal 2 is in fact a fighting game, and it is much better than Ergheiz. Your character can get stronger, better defense, and you can level up each limb the more you fight. As well, you can capture the various dungeon creatures... there are around 200 different monsters and fighters you can gain. Crazy.
Tobal No. 1 is still my favorite 3D fighter of all of them. It also has an "Adventure" mode where you roam around dungeon levels, fighting various monsters. Both Very unique and satisfying games.

I''m kicking myself as I read this. I had an idea for a fighting-RPG combo game many, many years ago, and when I was around 15 or so I set to work on it. After a year or so, I had an 80-page design doc, I had completely fleshed out almost every aspect of the game I could think of, from the story and character backgrounds down to the damage percentage tables. Then for a few years I decided I might want to do something other than game design. Now that I''m back into game design, I really regret having deleted it.

Why in the world would you just delete an 80 page design doc that you spent a year on? That doesn''t really make a lot of sense. I think most people would store it somewhere, you know, just in case....
Man, thats too bad you lost your doc...I dunno..i think you had the same idea i have now, i mean why not? sure it has been done before as mentioned in this board ie: Tobal, ehrgeiz.
But were they really that good or successful? i know i never really heard of tobal..well once or twice and ehrgeiz was crap when it came to the RPG elements. I mean, it doesn''t need to have exp or anything like that..but have armors, weapons and items you can gain by playing through the game. You should have kept your doc.

Raedyn, mine was very similar to the fighting engine in Ehrgeiz, seeing as how I loved that game. However, I threw in a little twist with the whole RPG thing. I was trying to make it as close to an old-school RPG system as possible--levels up after X number of battles, stats go up, learn new moves and spells after X number of levels, and so on. I have no idea why I deleted it.
Anyway, as for the "successful" bit, I heard some great advice when it comes to game design. There''s always going to be someone who has your idea and who has probably done it. But just because it''s been done before, that doesn''t mean that it can''t be done better. So just because those games weren''t necessarily "classics", it doesn''t mean that you can''t make one 10 times better. : )
