What is your favorite aspect of video games?
Pretty soon Ill be starting some bigger game projects. I want to know what is your favorite aspect of video games. For you, what is it that seperates good games from bad games.
I personally like originality. Something that makes other game developers say "Man, I wish I would have thought of that!" For Example, Metal Gear Solid 1. The whole idea of avoiding enemies and peeking behind walls was great. It was completely unlike any video game before. There were also some little things. Like catching a cold, sneezing, then blowing your cover. If you have played through the game with a vibrating controller, then one of the more memoral parts was the battle with phsyco mantis. He claims he can move the controller accross the floor with his *phsycic powers*. You put the controller on the floor, the vibrator kicks in, and the controller is moving all around. That part made me laugh.
I also like a bit of thought. Ive never been much for those mind dead action games. An immersive atmosphere is also great. One of the best things about Zelda and Metroid is their ability to suck you into their world. You lose complete track of time and assume the characters identity.
Those are some of my favorite aspects of video games. Now im asking you, whats yours?
Well, this aspect is only for those games that actually succeed in doing so...
A game that portrays a world that seems alive. Like the one in Half-life.
Medal of Honor did a good job at that, too.
I think that was easier to see when I first started playing video games. It doesn''t seem that way so much anymore. Not nearly as often.

It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.
I like the feeling of being really good at a game. Not just having crazy high levels or the best guns, but doing things that can only be achieved by pure player skill.
Rainbow Six and its sequels give the option of planning and preparing and anticipating and finally going through a level without a hitch. That''s a great feeling. Playing through a part of Metal Gear without being seen, or launching a blitzkrieg attack in Civilization that catchess an opponent totally off-guard is also nice. A few minutes of gameplay that could have come out of a really neat movie.
It''s those moments where you bring to bear all your experience and skill to do something really impressive that make games worthwhile to me. That requires respectable difficulty, intuitive controls, and fairly deep gameplay.
