Bishop_pass is right. If you''re going to make yourself a clone of an older game, at least have the decency to fancy it up with shiny graphics and clever music, expecially if you don''t have to cunning and skill to add new features.

I think that is entirely appropriate. If it''s not taking advantage of that kind of hardware, then what is the point of it? Afterall, if you want a Tetris game with less than dazzling graphics, I''m sure they''re out there to be had.

But at what limits? Should a Tetris clone also take advantage of all 256MB of ram commonly available on PCs today? Should it require 20GB of hard drive space? Afterall, if it''s not takeing advantage of that kind of hardware...then what''s the point?

If you don''t have the cunning and skill to design new gameplay features...then what''s the point of trying to get into game development?

Taking advantage of hardware and abusing it are two different things. What are the limits? How can anyone tell you that? There is no godly limit carved into the wall of some cave somewhere. You choose an audience and you gauge your own limit according to that.

You might still have the cunning and skill to design new graphical features.

Not to mention, what about learning ? Y''know, we''re not all gods who already know the secret to the universe. Some of us like to see if we can do that pixel shader, to see if we can make dynamic stencil shadows. I code because I want to get better at coding, not because I want to come up with new ideas. I come up with a new game idea every day! It''s insanely easy! But if I want to figure out how to bump-map I''m going to do something simple like a tetris clone to test it.

What about learning how to implament your ideas? Learning how to take that raw idea and turn it into a fun game?
I''m sorry if I offend, but you can''t make a great game by yourself, you need the input and expertice of others. You need a team because you can''t do it all alone within the reasonable time needed.

What about learning how to ride horses or how to knit sweaters? What your saying is that anyone working on a game must be focused on it''s design, but that''s not true at all. Someone may wish to excel in the graphics, speedy AI algorithms, network coding, or many other things that are put into a game.

It''s like saying, "Why do some people study chemistry instead of physics? It''s all science right?"

But what about new ideas, or not-so-new ideas, but ideas with a minuscle representation? I mean: We don''t need another "Mario Bros" clone, but what about an "Adventures of Lolo 1/2/3" clone?"

Man, I thought I was the only one left alive who still played Lolo.
