To get pricing for Visual C++ standard edition in the UK - start here -

You can also get a free copy with Andre Lamothe''s book - Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus - plus it''s a good book
how much does Microsoft Visual C++ cost?
Yes, many books like the one you mentioned include a LEARNING edition of MSVC6. But I think that its stripped down, and I also think that its illegal to distribute anything developed with this edition. Perhaps someone who has the learning edition can be more specific.

Be warned that the standard edition of VC 6 does not come with the optimising compiler.

[sarcasm]I''ll keep that info in mind when you have products for sale. I mean, why send you money when I can steal from you instead?[/sarcasm]
My advice for those without money (like me) - download Borland''s free compiler (or DevC, or something else that is free). It IS possible to develop software without risking fines or jail. If anyone needs help getting the Borland compiler to build the DirectX samples, I can provide the info (it''s easy).

I don''t know about England but here in Australia i used my mum''s student card and purchased VC++ 6.0 pro for less than half price.
I live in Australia, and have been searching for the best price on VC++ 6.0 Standard. What retailers sell it for half price if you use a student card? I haven''t heard of that before. Just wondering because that would really come in handy.
Borland''s free compiler:
http://www.borland.com/bcppbuilder/freecompiler/
It''s the full blown compiler used by C++Builder 5, but it''s only command-line based. (ie. no IDE, you have to use makefiles, etc.)
A note about the student discount MSVC: you can''t apply for the $50 rebate if you purchase this one, so in the long run it works out to about the same price.
