You are assuming too much. Is it really that unlikely that, for example, he uses it at university therfore he doesn''t have direct access to its box or the software for that matter?

any software that''s worth 5000 dollars is worth remembering the

maya standard is not 5000 dollars.
maybe he wants to learn ahead of his class, and go onto things they are not doing yet? or maybe his course is on a completly different area of computing, but he wants to learn some 3d as a hobby?
i am not saying that he deffinitly has a legal copy, i just dont like it when people think so negativly and always assume the worst about someone, when there is a very good chance they are wrong.
