Redfaction's Geo mod!
I already made a post like this in another area, but seeing as not everyone reads every section i figured it would be worth while to post in here as well. So here it goes...
For those of you who have played Red Faction you should know about totally cool geomod engine that made the stuff in game Destroyable and whatnot. I thought that was really, really cool. I was wondering if anyone knows how it works (in moderate detail) and how someone would implement such a thing. Also, would you need to change your mapping style? For example would I still be able to use 3DSmax to make maps and such?
Cheers, Raymondo
Well... this is purely hypothetical, since no one will ever tell me the truth about it, but i believe that the world is manipulated by the impact of the weapon fire. Now, when the destryable walls in Duke Nukem 3d were created, there was an entirely different system. It had pre based holes that you could blow out.
Im pretty sure a normal map would do, but you would have to show which walls could explode.

I loved those effects! I could play the testmap in the demo forever, digging tunnels everywhere
My guess how it works is that the maps were made as you usually do them and when you destroy a piece of the map, the destroyed triangles were stored aswell as the new parts of the maps, generated at run-time.. They obviously had to generate a whole lot of info; new triangles, cliping, lighting etc.. I have no clue how they could have done it so flawlessly though.
