Dev Diary #052 - End Of a Year, Start Of Another

Hello and welcome to this weeks Dev Diary!

Today will be a simple announcement with an explanation on why I have decided to bend my plans once again.


The Year 2019

As all of you know, or at least those who have followed the progress of this project, it has met with several plan changes during the past year, ultimately splitting in to two separate games being prepared at the same time. The music creation mentioned a few weeks back is for the first title, the Horror game, that was the original first goal of this project.

How ever, I was talked into starting a 2D project instead by someone, which should have been the RTS project, Even then, I just couldn't let go of the idea of making a 3D game and thus, designing a RTS game didn't make the asset designing much simpler, at least not thus far. Since the story spans from the ancient times to modernity, having a precise enough map for the RTS game would be essential, in order to tie the game into the real world as well - bridging the gap between fantasy and reality, what is and what could have been and what if there was a tangible other world, that we just can't see, touch or smell.

This has led to even more technical problems, as to how to solve the various issues that has come with trying to adapt the real world heightmaps to work in unity with as much automation as possible - the foremost thing that should work before even a simple real-world area could be tested and built upon step by step. For those who are not in the loop about what I'm talking about, the problem is how to convert thousands of heightmaps to be compatible with unity by using a free software (Photoshop works, but it's not free), so that Unity can generate the terrain tiles out from those files automatically, in an orderly fashion.

Having 2 project has it's advantages also though, as sometimes, when you feel like you are dead-locked with the other project, you can come up something new with the other project. It does, how ever, lengthen the development time of both, but they do back each other up at the same time. If your priority is to launch a game as fast as possible, don't take this road. Only if you have a larger scope for your game, or you like to dedicate more time for your project, then having two projects could be beneficial for you.

As it stands on my situation, designing the background story for both has been easier when designing the games together, as it is easier to visualize how the story or mythos becomes continuous through out the universe of the games.


Road To The Future

As for the future, I mentioned a while back that a chess game would be one of the simplest first projects for a game developer to undertake. I didn't think of it as a good starting point before, as the way I like to learn by my self, is to learn while doing my main project. Though recently I have began to think that maybe I really should consider doing one as an exercise project, before continuing with the RTS -title. In the end, it doesn't really matter how you educate your self, as long as you find the means that are most efficient for you, as every person learns differently. Every advice you receive might not apply to the way you are familiar of handling things, but most are applicable to being modified to fit in with the way you work.

I will be continuing the music project, as when you get the inspiration for a musical piece or story topic, it should be written down as soon as possible. Act on your inspiration, when ever the situation allows it.

I have also furthered the plans for the YouTube channel a bit. No new content for it is planned for the near future, but I might take up on Vlogs during the next year, if the budget allows it. Also, the musical piece that I'm currently making will be released on the YouTube channel when ready. draft releases are also reserved as a possibility.


Conclusion
