Hi, I''m a modeller / concept artist by experience. No coding skills at all. Right now I''m working out a design for a huge exploration game with big outdoor scenes, and a big part of this will be climbing rockfaces and other vertical surfaces.....that''s the big plan so far. For now, me and my coder are concentrating on working on the climbing engine, so we''re going to bypass the outdoor environments first and develop an indoor climbing thing. We want your options on the walls to mimic a real-world wall climb.. what would be a good way to implement this? My idea was to use IK on the hands and feet and just make the rest of the limbs follow naturally by adding range of motion limiters to the joints, adding sockets into them that will link up to anchor points on walls. This will save on tedious animation work, considering the number of permutations for the way your character will move, as you can imagine. Of course, the big question on my mind also is "will it be fun?" So we''re throwing in some weapons too. But that''s a different post altogether... Tell me what you think! -Snowfly
-It's got to be more than a memory, or is life just a fantasy and a piss in the sand?
I tried looking for it yesterday, couldn''t find it, but I know there''s been a thread in the past that was about rock-climbing. Anyone?
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

No, that wasn''t the one. I think it was mainly about rope-use during climbing.

i would definately play a game like this. for me though, i don''t know about the weapons bit. i''d like a game that rewards you on your exploration skills for once and not your kill score. it might be boring to some, but relaxing is the word i would use. if the outside world is really expansive and there''s these mountains sporadically placed around to climb, i''d like to climb them for the same reasons the real mountain climbers do. they are there, the view must be extraordinary, and bragging rights. maybe allow for a mountain creator of sorts? allowing people to create a "level" mountain making "paths" to head up the mountain? it could be a death match still, peopla racing to be the first to the top. go too fast and you can fall, too slow and someone could be up there waiting for you. it might be a viable alternative to the weapons bit and still allow for a satisfying exploration game.

Below are all threads started by me recently in the Lounge.

There's a lot of information here about climbing technique: Bouldering at your limit is the art of...

More info on bouldering: Boulderin' at Rubidoux!

Fire your imagination. Climbing is about entering real fantasy worlds. Check it out: Keeler Needle revisited: I fixed the image.

Real logistics for backpacking trips: Whitney / Russell (for pwd and other interested parties).

Lots of info on climbing and backpacking and an invitation to do that from me, including exploration of the area around Keeler Needle and Mount Whitney: Climbing/Exploring/Backpacking/Mountains/Canyons.

A rambling thread that ultimately comes around to talk mostly about climbing: Defying classification.

Views on hiking: The hiking myth.

It''s a totally bomber hold found on granite in the shape of a protruding lump which often has a ''neck'' that is slightly narrower than its head.
