I''m taking a pole and have a few questions: Now I know these are very vague and could require a long answer, but if you could do me the favor of answering, it would mean alot for the research paper I''m writing. Thanks all, Larry 1. What would be the best space game ever? Don''t hold back, tell all. Is is MMOPG, Size, Teams, Graphics, what??? 2. What would be the best ground game ever? Don''t hold back, tell all. Is is MMOPG, Size, Teams, Graphics, what??? 3. What would be the best space game ever, THAT IS NOT A PERSISTENT WORLD? Don''t hold back, tell all. Is is MMOPG, Size, Teams, Graphics, what??? (If same as 1 above, say so) 3. What would be the best ground game ever, THAT IS NOT A PERSISTENT WORLD? Don''t hold back, tell all. Is is MMOPG, Size, Teams, Graphics, what??? (If same as 2 above, say so)

Thanks for the post, but I guess I wasn''t clear. I''m not looking for titles of other games. I want to know what features you think will make the best game ever, that''s not been created yet. Start with a blank slate and tell me all the things you''d love to see in a game!!!

Thanks
ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh

ok ..

1) Adventure games (ala monkey island, space quest). I miss that kind of 2d game play

2) high level of interaction, but lots of sarcastic humor.

3) space babes ??? holding space beer...

4) isometric battle fields.. really happening, like starcraft..

5) not too much micromanagement, dont quite like that..

6) open ended gameplay. You can be the villain if you want.

7) Ability to save game anywhere.

8) not too much cutscene''s, and try to make cutscenes in the game engine itself, not some movie..

Hey Larry, these questions suck.

1. What would be the best space game ever?
Freespace 2.

2. What would be the best ground game ever?
This just doesn''t make sense - with the exception of flying and space games, the only other games you get are ''ground based games''. Are you thinking maybe something more like best military/combat sim using a ground based unit?

3. What would be the best space game ever?
Freespace 2.

3. What would be the best ground game ever?
Again, this question sucks.

That probably didn''t help, but then again, if you''re asking questions like that you''re beyond help.

I'm sorry you feel that way man. It's unfortunate you missed the whole point of the question. As I already stated, I'm not asking for what existing game do you think are cool, but if you were creating your own game that was massively multi-player and persistent with continuous game play (ala Ultima Online, Everquest, Asherons Call or the new Earth and Beyond) what features would you want to see in such a game to make it the greatest ever.

Basically, let's list the limitations we'd like to see corrected in a new title:

For example, Ultima Online isn't 3D, I'd like full 3D. Its world is limited in size; I'd like much bigger worlds. Maybe some people want to be able to mine for raw materials differently to have more control over resources; maybe others want more diversity in learning and character enhancement. Maybe some want to leave the planet and travel the stars to another planet.

This is a very informal and eye opening question to let individuals pour their hearts into defining the ultimate game.

Then I asked another set of questions removing the continuous, persistent aspect. Basically defining a great game that starts and ends and starts again, not just one continuous story.

I know most of the people who post here are smart and can grasp what I'm asking for. If you choose not to participate, that's cool too. This is just for a research project I'm doing.

Thanks to all who are interested in helping out!!!

PS: I agree Freespace is one of my favorite space combat games ;-)

Don''t worry Zap, I didn''t get his questions either.

Quad, I know that in your head it make sense, but to us all it doesnt.

Are you talking about 3D FPS ?
What''s your definition of Space Game and Ground Game?
...
That''s just the point. I don’t want to define it. To me there shouldn''t be a difference and the ultimate game would include both space and ground (but that’s me).

From you, I want you to use your imagination. FPS, Role playing, RTS, Adventure, Action, etc... It can all be ground or space, but it''s usually one or the other, not both.

This shouldn''t be complicated. Just think of games you like, any game, and then think how that game could have been better, and share it with us.

Thanks, and I''m sorry for the lack of clarity and direction. I didn''t and still don''t want to say too much because I don''t want to drive anyone in a particular direction. I want you to follow your heart and describe what a great game means to you!

I hope that helps. If not, then just forget the post, and I''ll try and start a new one, restated. Hopefully though, you''re starting to understand.

Thanks again!
I didn''t really get it at first either, except I''m not going to be rude about it. The best game would be like Elite and its sequels, except done properly.

- Land on planets, dock with space stations and other spaceships
- Other pilots with good AI, who remember their past and their association with you
- A flight system that is NOT realistic, but more in the line of XWing Alliance
- Galaxy events/battles where you can decide whose side you want to be on
- Hire/team up with others to accomplish bigger tasks like attacking and taking over a space station
- Set up bases in uninhabited worlds
- Various ships/weapons/technologies etc etc
- Walk around planets/spacestations in a FPS style

I could go on (and on).
I think you might want to reword your question to:

Q: What features would be included in your dream space game?
(online/offline, 2d/3d, single-player/multi-player, etc)

(not sure what you mean by ''ground game'' but I guess anything that doesn''t take place in space)

You can get rid of questions 3 and 4, since the ''persistent world'' element would be one of the features people would give as an answer to the first question.
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.
