Standards - a word that is not often heard in the artificial intelligence
community! In a field that develops as fast as AI, standards may not have
a very long life span, but wouldn''t it be nice to have some anyway? For
example, for an interface between a computer game and artificial intelligence
procedures? Programmers could reuse their code more easily and interface
AI tools from third-party developers. This would mean higher reliability,
higher quality and lower development costs! Also, academic AI research
could increase its impact, learning about and focusing on specific computer
game requirements.
A roundtable was set up at the GDC 2002 conference to explore the
potentials of such an endeavor and had a very positive resonance. The
International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has now started to form
an organizational framework for such a standards initiative - the AI
Standards Committee. Working groups will be set up to work on specific
topics like interfaces for "pathfinding", "steering", "influence mapping",
"decision trees", "finite state machines", "rule-based systems", "goal-
oriented action planning", "resource handling", and "world interfacing".
These working groups will be composed of game AI programming experts, AI
tool producers and academic AI researchers. If you like to suggest someone
(including yourself), please send me a quick email on why they would like
to become involved, and in which working groups they would be interested
in. As the work in many of the areas is very interdependent (in particular,
with world interfacing), suggestions for persons covering two working
groups are especially welcome.
Things are moving fast, and those that are interested should contact me
as soon as possible:

Get involved and push game AI development to the next level!
