Everyone read this...
Ok, I don''t want to be mean here, but something''s been bothering me for a while now. It seems that everytime I see a post from someone with a game idea, they want to make some huge rpg or mmorpg! This is soooo unrealistic! I know that new programmers are anxious to make something grand (i was once there myself), but come on! I''ve read some that want to put so much into their game. This just isn''t going to happen. Whatever happened to making a simple, yet fun puzzle game in a week or two. Or maybe creating a new type of game that''s fresh and exciting. Frankly, I''m sick of rpgs and the like. Here''s my message to everyone wanting to make a game: PLEASE EVALUATE HOW MUCH WORK WILL NEED TO GO INTO YOUR GAME! PLEASE! I currently work at a PlayStation developer as a programmer and know that even the smallest things take time and effort. You can''t just expect to make an rpg your first time around. Everyone wants to conquer the world with their first few games. Start simple, please!

No. I have no interest in making a little puzzle. I can do it, therefore, it isn''t interesting.
I find the development of tools, utilities, and modules which assist in the development of large groundbreaking projects much more interesting.

Well, they can waste their time, but as long as they learn their lesson, I don''t see why they shouldn''t attempt to work on grand RPGs. Surely they will fail, but failure is part of learning is it not?
Yes, even simple games take a long time. I guess, what I''m saying here, is that do whatever it takes to learn all you can, whther it''s a small project or a big one.

Just because you can do something, doesn''t make it not interesting. You can always improve and make your next game better. And I was just using puzzle as an example of a game that''s manageable for a beginner programmer. Oh, and Tetris: who ever said that wasn''t interesting! And I would bet money that most beginner programmers who say they can make a puzzle game (for example Tetris) wouldn''t be able to do so.

You''re entitled to your opinions. Some here can choose to make a Tetris game if they feel they want to or they need to. I could write a Tetris game pretty quickly. I don''t want to. Do you see? I do not want to. In 1987 I was researching ray tracing academic papers and implementing a ray tracer on the Amiga computer. I like computer science topics related to things like AI agents, radiosity, planning, ecosystem simulation, etc. That''s what appeals to me. That is what I am going to discuss and those topics happen to dovetail with RPGs to some extent.

a.) Who said all of us are beginners?
b.) Where are your credentials? Without explicitly stating them your post is just opinion - another meaningless rant to be ignored. Put up or shut up.

Thanks to Kylotan for the idea!

Yeah, bishop does have a good point, but there is not a point in some people starting on such projects too. The only one being overambitious hurts is the one who himself is. I think it''s all a matter of judging what you can and can not do. Of course it is a little annoying seeing 100 people come in here saying "I''ve got a cool MMORPG idea I''m making, how do I learn C++?" It''s a matter of people being better self judges.

I''m sorry, but why in the hell would I post about an exciting new Tetris clone? (BTW, I said that Tetris was boring the first time I saw it and it still sucks...)
Wow, I made Mastermind for the computer... I''m pushing the envelope there. Unfortunately I''m only pushing the envelope that my phone bill came in because I''m not pushing anything on my computer except a few keys and my mouse.
You really want to know why we don''t post about our *tris clones or other puzzle games? Because they''re BORING AS HELL!!!

1) I never said that any of you were beginners. I''m just stating that It''s unrealistic when people say "This is my first game and I have an idea for this huge rpg with all these bells and whistles".
2) Yes, you guys are NOT beginners. If you have been programming since 1987 then NO, you are not a beginner. This post wasn''t intended for you.
3) I have made many small games, programmed for the PlayStation and am currently working on my own 3D OpenGL game engine. Those are my credentials.
Sorry if I offended any of you. That was not my intent. I am just trying to save some newbies the hassle of trying to create something that they cant. But Darkor had a good point:
