file formats & mesh deformation???

Hey, this is my first post, cool!
Anyway, what file format can be used with mesh deformation? I''ve been told that the 3DS and X file formats cannot use any form of mesh deformation, although I''ve also been told that the X file format can use limited deformation starting with DX8. MD2 and MD3 formats (I think that''s right, the ones from Quake and Halflife, and stuff) use the deformation, but are limited to very low poly files, right??? What if I want a model around 2000 or 3000 poly''s to bend realistically? I don''t want to hard code this! Anyone got any suggestions for a good 3D file format for me to use?
