Peer-to-Peer / Client-Server Combo

Quick and easy, not trying for another huge P2P vs. client/server thread here. Simple idea; mix peer to peer and client server so that high bandwidth connections connect peer to peer, but low band width connections only use client-server with local (therefore faster) peer node as the server. Comments/Suggestions? Know of anyone using such a system? Any suggestions for dynamically determining which nodes are best as peers, which as clients? Cheers!
Is a nice idea but how do you prevent the peer nodes that are acting as servers from being hacked? As if they where to be hacked then all the players using that node as a server could be having their data/packets tampered with or ignored by the peer server.

Apart from that you could always attempt to work out the closest clients using a combination of traceroute and ping I suppose but that would require a bit of extra work on the servers part working it all out. I''ve no idea how much extra work though...

Just my thoughts/ramblings on the issue.

Cheers,
