I was watching one of the Sergio Leone westerns today and wondering why there have never been any (at least to my knowledge) GOOD (<--keyword: GOOD) games set in the Old West. It''s just ripe for development: good guys, bad guys, gun fights, saloons, fighting...etc.
Yeah, really, why weren''t there any game spin offs made from that "Wild Wild West" movie a couple years back?

If I remember correctly, LucasArts made a "Spaghetti Western" game several years ago..one of their "Kinda Cute, Kinda Funny" games.
And there is a HalfLife mod set in the old west, I believe.
Well, I could offer the Wild Arms series on the playstation, and on PS2 in half a year. But, yeah, its an untapped image that could probably be explored.

The Lucas Arts games was Outlaw. Never played it myself, as, at the time, it only ran on Voodoo cards, and I was stuck with my Verite (.. oh .. and after seeing the glory of accelerated grafics, I was also very reluctant to buy a game I would only be able to play unaccelerated. The people who played it said it was quite good.
You might be able to find a copy at your local store for nearly nothing. I think there was also a D3D patch released in the meantime.

A few month ago a Baldur's Gate like game set in the Wild West was released. (don't remember the name ... check review sites)

There also was a game on either the Amiga or the C64 (it's so long ago I can't even remember on which of the machine it ran on It was by the same company who brought 'The Day of the Ants' (or something with a similar cheesy title), 'TV-Sports Football' and other cinematic games (I think the company was called Cinemaware). The feeling I have is that it was kind of fun in a very strange way. The only thing I remember halfway clearly was the dueling : The camera was positioned just behind your pistol holder, and you saw that, your hand and you opponent a bit further off. It was a test of reflex and aiming. The really funny stuff though was when you lost a duel and the screen slowly blackened with written comments of the public. 'Call a doctor!' 'no use .. sigh .. he is dead!' 'Oh my god .. the sheriff is dead' 'He was such a brave man' ... aso)
Don't ask me about the title though. (actually I'm not sure about the titles of the Ant game (made like a cheesy 60s B-Movie about Atomically grown Ants coming to rule the earth) and the football game)

Oh .. and then you also have 'Bank Panic' (check out MAME for a copy) although that's even older and extremely cheesy and simplistic (but I like it

EDIT: LOL .. just checked and Cinemaware still exists (or perhaps 'exists again' would be more accurate.) The Ant game was called 'It Came From The Desert'. They also did Defender of the Crown.

That ant game, do you mean "It Came From the Desert"?

The old west...now we are talking

A "wild wild west" type game would be fantastic...I''ve been working over the genre for a while in my head and think the genre could prove very fuitful for the right game...a wild, wild west steampunkish RPG anyone?

That Lucasarts game, Outlaw, was made with the old Dark Forces engine...and it was pretty cool

Years and years ago I recall a animated Laserdisk game...can''t recall the name...it wasn''t great by any meens...it had the most simple gameplay control system ever...a single button...basicly players were shown these animated clips (like Dragons layer) and they had to push the button at the right time to fire thier gun...I distinctly recall watching some dude beat the game...at the end their was one of those "shoot outs at dawn" between the player charactor and the main bad guy...bad guy flips a coin up into the air, and at the exact moment it hits the ground players were suppost to fire thier guns...problem was that you had to have EXACT timeing to do this...press to early and the bad guy dodges the shot...press to late and the player gets shot...the dude playing the game must have spent $5 in quarters just to beat the game...what a waste!

Anonymous, yep .. I meant ''It Came from the Desert''

The Western game was called ''Law of The West'' (and wasn''t by Cinemaware after all)
I just made a search through the net just to find it, as it was driving me crazy

Yea, there''ve been a couple "Mad Dog McCree"-ish titles, and that annoying Sega hologram game with the cowboy, but there''s never been a "defining title" for the genre, I guess. Heck, off the top of my head, a FPS'' weapons:

Pistol: Colt 45
Rifle: Winchester lever action
Sniper Rifle: Sharps single shot

A Sim: SimCity-ish city management game where you have to run your Gold Rush era town. Bring in gambling and crime (i.e. outlaws) grows. Build new housing, and prospectors may rush in, but so might "less desirables". Disasters include attacks by outlaws, "the wells goin'' dry", and the like.

Plenty of material just waiting for the right person.
Wild West can be great for weapons:
  • Six shooters
  • Rifles
  • Knives
  • Long knives (swords, maybe the Mexican Army had them)
  • Dynamite
  • Poison
  • Bow and arrow
  • Your fist

And great for fighting:
  • Duels
  • Brawls and fist fights
  • Knife fights
  • Sniping from those rooftop facades
  • Horseback chases

And great for mini plots:
  • Bank robberies
  • Bounty hunting
  • Poker games
  • Jail breaks
  • Looking out for banditos
  • Gold and silver mine exploration

And loads of treasure options:
  • Gold and silver mines
  • Bank safes
  • Robber stashes
  • Stagecoach robberies
