MY ENGINE!!
hi,
I am currently developing an Iso engine. Based on the awsome article recently posted here about tile engines in D3D I am currently considering changing over to D3D approach for my graphics. The Problem is that I am currently developing the engine for my new RTS game. My question is that will the general public have the graphics hardware to support a D3D engine or should I make the effort to do some type of sofware rendering technique also.

Odds are that you won''t be finished with your game for some time yet. And as computers today hardly ever are delivered without hardware acceleration (except for laptops). You can safely assume that the majority of the community will be able run your game.
(This is just my opinion, I have not made any kind of survey to support my theories but I believe they are accurate anyway.)

Your right I will probably not have my game done util later this year probably fall. The way technology is increasing with such speed I will probably do it in D3D .

The last two games I bought both required 3d accelartion. One of them is Everquest and if their usership is any indication, the market is pretty good for games that require 3d acceleration.
