calm down, be patient...

Caliber sounds like it could be interesting. Be careful though not to let it turn into a Half-Life ripoff.

Copyrighted by whom? and why?

Tolkien is dead. Copyrights were meant to protect the intellectual property of authors of original ideas, not their children and thier childrens children and every other eevil corporation that wants to get their greedy hands...

I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round they sped. I was disturbed at this; I accosted the man.
"It is futile," I said, You can never -- "

"You lie," he cried, And ran on.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My signature is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My signature, without me, is useless. Without my signature, I am useless.
some thing that was missing in half-life: they didn''t have any real cut scenes. if i ever make it around to making caliber, i will be sure not to copy half-life. too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

got any other storylines for me?

The hobbit is copyright by Tolkien''s publishers, so your first idea might be your best bet. In all honesty you should just try to think of something that hasn''t been done and go with it.
thats the hardest part. it seems every time i come up with a good idea, 2 months later a game comes out that is just like i thought of. honest!

I know what you mean, but you should look at that like it is a good thing. At least you get to play whatever game it is that you apparently thought of and you didn''t have to do any work.

Your first one is probably the one you should pursue. It''s an original idea that could turn into a very good game.

One main problem with your second suggestion is, of course, the copyright idea. You''d have to get the license, or at least permission to do it, which I don''t think would be worth all the trouble. The other thing is that everyone knows the story, which confines you and doesn''t allow much in the way of any surprises for the player...

But yeah, my advice is to go with the first one.

About the lack of cut-scenes in HL: That was intentional, they felt cut-scenes would draw you out of the game and make it less meaningful, less realistic. Having the scenes actually played out in the game itself made them more realistic, no?

About game ideas: Well, if you see it in their game 2 months later, and that game has been in production for 2 years, it means they had the idea a while before you did...You can only really be sure it was an original idea if you have it several years before the competiton...Like my idea for how to do cloaking in 3D, I haven''t seen it done yet! Heheh...

- Ah, to write code; to compose electrical music, to manipulate the bits that make up everything...such is our chosen line of work. And for a game, no less!
- Hai, watashi no chichi no kuruma ga oishikatta desu!...or, in other words, "Yes, my dad's car was delicious!"
I suppose i never thought of things in that light before. It is nice to hear that someone thinks something of mine is half good.

I suppose i could even make a variation of that first storyline and just have the guy an average citizen then everything goes black and when he wakes up the town is gone nuts. I think that could be pretty cool with lots of half wrecked buildings. what do you think of that for a variation?
"''Shinning''? Don''t you mean the ''Shining''?"
"Acch, no, boy! It''s ''Shinning''! Do you want to get sued?!?"

You probably shouldn''t bother with the Hobbit idea, since it would be VERY expensive to get that license (one of my friend''s mom''s worked for a while licensing the song "Bad to the Bone" -- the amount they charge for the licenses is ridiculous)

Your first idea sounds good, but would need something to distinguish itself from games like Half-Life.
