Super Robot Wars/Taisen
Alright, there seems to be a lack of fun anime games, so I''ve
taken it upon myself to create one.
Has anyone in here played Super Robot Wars/Taisen?
I''m making a game with the same sort of feel, only it''s going to
end up being multiplayer and for single characters as opposed to
giant robots/mechs. My gfx engine is pretty much done and
I''m just starting on the game engine now.
What I want to know is if anyone didn''t find this game fun and
why, and if they DO find it fun, what about the series is it that
you love?
If anyone has never played the series, post a message and I''ll
try to explain as best as I can. ^_^

Yeah, I''m not surprised.
It''s a japanese game.
Basically, it''s a turn-based strategy game with giant robots from
many different series. Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion,
Nadesico, Mazinger Z, Macross etc...
There have been around 15 or so games for all manners of
different consoles. NES, Gameboy, GBAdvance, SNES, N64, PSX,
Dreamcast and even the Wonderswan.
The stories are actually pretty good, despite the amalgam of
different series.
If you like anime, you should find a copy(I hesitate to say roms
because of the mixed feeling, but it''s not easy to find). There
are plenty of FAQs with enough translations to get you through a
game.

Grin, I got a huge back ground on all sorts of different games including Robot Wars so I can level with ya if no one else here can.
The game is fun. I''m a huge sucker for strategy games (even if it''s turn based) and all the flashy clips of seeing two gundams fight each other with laser sabres.
I''m not sure if making a clone would do well though... The Robot Wars series'' popularity benefited from a ton of anime fan base. Plus the conceptual art involve in games like this is so huge that I don''t think any normal developer can even match SRW; remember that each game have about 15 different anime series worth of stuffs all compacted into it. And it''s not just the art but also the songs too.
Yes, the game is fun, but I would think twice about going after something like this unless I got the backing of some big time artists and song writers. Or you could tone the graphics and songs down changing it to standard turn base strategy like Advance Wars. (which sold quite well on GBA I believe.)

Actually, I''m just providing the engine and basic gfx.
I''m making it ''plug-in-able'' so people may import their own
characters.
Of course there''ll be a few examples, tho...not from ME of
course...*cough*(~,^).
This is just my little project. My first real game(well, after a
couple qbasic text games, a half-life mod that only saw one
crappy release(artist problems) and a cheap little tetris clone
that I never completely finished).
So you like the flash of the game the most, then? I guess that
is the big selling point of the series. ^,^
Personally, I like the thought of pitting familiar robots A vs.
familiar robots B and seeing who''ll win.
This game is my chess.
Back to the point(this being the design forum and all ^,^)...
Would you find a SRW game fun if it was a 2-player vs. battle?
I mean, it seems a lot of people love the plots, so do you think
a strategy game like this would be fun?

Yea I''ve heard of Super Robot Wars. I''ve played it on PS1. It''s kind of a 3d raiden type shooter. More like Star Wars Rogue Squadron except you can''t turn. I found it fun because of the wide variety of characters you could choose and also you have to figure out which robot goes best in each level.

Hmm...I don''t know what game you mean...Colony Wars or that
Hive game, perhaps, but it''s not SRW.

The main appeal of SRW is the well known mechs. Take that away and it isn''t any better than a host of other similar games. Compare it to say Shining Force, Arc the Lad, Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, Front Misson, Final Fantasy: Tactics, etc etc. Actually in terms of play mechanics it is on the fairly simple end, especially compared to say Tactics Ogre.
What makes it nice are the mechs, the individual musics for characters, voices, etc etc. The actual gameplay is not standout. If you want to make a similar game, but lose the mechs, you lose the main appeal. IMO you would be better off taking elements from games that had more strategic depth and rely more on gameplay and less on content.

My purpose in coding this, I guess, is that I want SRW with
anime characters(of the non-giant-robot variety) and I want to
play against other people.
I''m not going for the ultimate in strategic depth here, but I
think that it could just be some good fun. Personally, I never
get bored hearing the characters belt out their attacks. ^_^
Does it sound like fun?

I would probably play it. I assume that if it using real anime characters you can''t really release as anything other than freeware though.
I would say the the fun someone derives from it is almost entirely from their familiarity with the characters. If you could expand the actual strategy a bit it might appeal to strategy fans as well as anime fans. Just a few changes like better maps, more pronounced terrain differences, etc would go a long way.
