Performace hit with glPolygonMode

When I render with backfaces culled, textureing on, and filled polys i get about 160fps. When I set the polygon mode to outline, and turn texureing off i get about 30fps? There is no loghting of depth testing either, this is with triangle strips, but plain triangles is even slower?

maybe "outline" is not supported by your gfx card?

normally GL_LINE is slower than GL_FILL true there might be less drawn on the screen BUT
some drivers will draw one GL_LINE triangle as 3 thin triangles
also most drivers aint really optimized for GL_LINE
