Myst - So beautiful I never actually beat this game, but it made a big impact on my life. It opened my eyes to alot of stuff, and the fact that there was more out there.

You never finished it? I''d go back and do so, if I were you. As far as I can remember it''s worth it. Especially if you plan to go on to Riven.

Oh, and interesting that Tacit mentions Wolfenstein and speech synthesis - and not that it was the first raycasting 3D game (ever, AFAIK).

Ahhh…see, I didn''t know that about the original Wolfenstein. Note I''m not talking about Wolf3D, but Escape from Castle Wolfenstein, the very first game that was on the Apple II, the Atari 800, and the Commodore 64 (and maybe others). Very interesting. To me, the speech synthesis was the thing that stood out. Mostly because it was so bad.

OH! I never knew there was a predecessor to Wolf3D?

*pulls out Google*

Superpig...you might be able to track down a copy on some abandonware sites.

Anyone here remember Temple of Apshai? How about Marble Madness? The Eidolon? Rogue? Blue Max? Gyruss?

How about Wasteland, Fallout''s spiritual predecessor?

Man, I didn''t realize I''d played (and forgotten) so many games...

One of my old favorites was Jumpman. I still wheel it out now and then on my C64 emulator. There was one level that I have only ever seen once, despite the hundreds of hours playing this game. Sigh...
You are not the one beautiful and unique snowflake who, unlike the rest of us, doesn't have to go through the tedious and difficult process of science in order to establish the truth. You're as foolable as anyone else. And since you have taken no precautions to avoid fooling yourself, the self-evident fact that countless millions of humans before you have also fooled themselves leads me to the parsimonious belief that you have too.--Daniel Rutter

Forbidden Forest, The Goonies, Aztec Challenge, Pharaoh''s Curse,
Rick Dangerous, Commando, Zorro, Choplifter, H.E.R.O., Pitfall II, ... I want my C64 back! (well actually I still got it )

Please excuse my ignorance.()

What is a C64?

Mind you that I started using computers about the time Microsoft was creating Windows 95, and I wasn''t actually interested (meaning as interested as I am now) in computers untill I started using Windows 98, so I don''t know alot about old stuff.

Sorry.

Hey people,

Star Raiders - Man was this game ever cool in its day. The 2600 verion came with an external 'control pad' with buttons for the astrogation, weapons, etc. The Atari 800 version was even cooler. Firt game that truly gave me the sense of ship-to-ship combat through space.

Liked it so much I wrote a game in the same vein for the Atari Jaguar which went on to become the holy grail for that platform. This game spawned its own underground trading economy due to its rarety.

quote: Bruce Lee - Great scrolling platform game. You could play single player (you would be Bruce), or two-player (one of you would play this huge sumo wrestler dude). There was a computer controlled Ninja character who tended to fly around and attack you, but he was easy to kill. Bruce's special move was a flying side kick, which you accomplished by running and kicking. The sumo wrestler's special move was to moo like a cow. Don't ask me.

Great game, but much like another classic, Pharaoh's Curse, it was too easy, and it got repetitive...

quote: Escape from Castle Wolfenstein (the origina) - Very fun. One of the first games I played that used speech synthesis (of a sort).

Somehow this game was never as much fun off of the Apple II. I don't know why.

quote: F-15 Strike Eagle - This was one of Microprose's early sim games. Very fun!

Sid Meier's first actually "good" game IMO. I used to marvel at just how awful his first few were, and I really wondered what the big deal was with him. From here on in though, things got a lot better.

quote: Silent Service - Another Microprose title. This time you're a WW2 sub commander. Very well done, great periscope view. I really loved this game.

I liked it so much I never played another sub game...

quote: Choplifter - This was great on the Apple ][. Remember those crappy Apple joysticks??

Another great Apple game that somehow didn't survive translation to other platforms.

quote: Archon - Kind of like a combo chess/fighting game. Very fun for two players.

Remember when EA used to be called Electronic Arts, and they used to make fun games? Archon is only overshadowed by M.U.L.E., which is still one of the reigning gods of party games IMO.

So what did you miss IMO?

Way Out: probably the true first FPS game (never mind the Carmack crowing in the corner)

Necromancer: My all-time favorite 2D platformer

Rescue at Fractalus: No one has ever made a decent sequel (though Scorched Planet was a nice try)

Ballblazer: Not a decent sequel, ever, not even a nice try, LucasArts must have had a stroke around 1996 or something

Sundog: Confession, while I respect the concept, and the freedom, I hate Elite for its mouse control (there, I've said it), but I love Sundog, go figure

2600 Warlords: Another great party game

Bolo: 2600 Combat on steroids (though I'd love to see Tank Pong updated)

Star Glider 2: Fly through entire solar systems, enter the atmospheres of planets, meet interesting creatures, and kill them. Does mouse control justice.

Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back: Never understood the hype around Ultima Underworld having played these games so many years before.

That's my dirty dozen or so...
