The classics

Hey people, I was just thinking back to some of the old classic games I played and loved over the course of my gaming history, and thought I''d just throw a couple out there to see if other people remember them as fondly as I do. Star Raiders - Man was this game ever cool in its day. The 2600 verion came with an external ''control pad'' with buttons for the astrogation, weapons, etc. The Atari 800 version was even cooler. Firt game that truly gave me the sense of ship-to-ship combat through space. Bruce Lee - Great scrolling platform game. You could play single player (you would be Bruce), or two-player (one of you would play this huge sumo wrestler dude). There was a computer controlled Ninja character who tended to fly around and attack you, but he was easy to kill. Bruce''s special move was a flying side kick, which you accomplished by running and kicking. The sumo wrestler''s special move was to moo like a cow. Don''t ask me. Escape from Castle Wolfenstein (the origina) - Very fun. One of the first games I played that used speech synthesis (of a sort). F-15 Strike Eagle - This was one of Microprose''s early sim games. Very fun! Silent Service - Another Microprose title. This time you''re a WW2 sub commander. Very well done, great periscope view. I really loved this game. Choplifter - This was great on the Apple ][. Remember those crappy Apple joysticks?? Archon - Kind of like a combo chess/fighting game. Very fun for two players. Oh the good old days... There are many many more but I don''t want to bore you... R.

nice,

yeah i often reminisce <sp?> about old games and the question i keep coming back to is "why the hell do those continue to have amaxing replay value long after modern games are boring as hell?"

theory 1:
With a game that has more plot you get way involved but when you finish the game it''s boring cause you already know what happened.

theory 2:
older games like choplifter, asteroids, snake, etc are much closer to a true stimulous reward (like hitting a lever to get cocaine pumped into a rats brain).

i dunno. i''ve always been saddened when my favorite game drops to my absolutely least favorite game b/c i can''t bring myself to play it again.

not sure where i''m going here, but i guess the question i''m asking is should newer games strive for the infinite replay ability of breakout or centipede? or really, is it possible to have an immersive plot and game complexity but also replayability or are the two mutually exclusive?

Legends of Valor - an old DOS game ( believe, I barely remember, it might have been for early Windows ) called Legends of Valor, or LOV. It''s basically a really cool first person RPG that got me into D&D. I''d say it''s one of the best games I''ve ever played (never beat it, but some day I''d love to find it and play it).

Hocus Pocus - The first game I ever played for the PC (or maybe.. I''m pretty sure it was my first). It was a DOS game that came with my first piece of carp (yes, carp) computer.

Final Fantasy 7 - Of course, it''s not old, but it''s the best game ever and it''s what really got me into game development. I was interested since I played my first game, but this game really showed me what games are about. If I ever feel like all hope is lost, I play this game. Actually, I always play this game. I have 7 full memory cards with just FF7 on them (no joke).

Myst - So beautiful I never actually beat this game, but it made a big impact on my life. It opened my eyes to alot of stuff, and the fact that there was more out there.

Heh. Felt good!

Yeah you''re right Drizzt DoUrden,

Final Fantasy is really (i mean REALLY) amazing.
It''s the best game i have ever played.

A good plot, make a game good.
And FF7 has the best plot.

btw, there are many other good games.

You never finished it? I'd go back and do so, if I were you. As far as I can remember it's worth it. Especially if you plan to go on to Riven.

Oh, and interesting that Tacit mentions Wolfenstein and speech synthesis - and not that it was the first raycasting 3D game (ever, AFAIK).

Heh. I have a copy of Myst sitting in my desk drawer. Once I get bored of Return to Castle Wolfenstien (which won''t be long, I got it yesterday, and I truly hate FPSs, so I probably won''t be playing for long. I''ll admit that it is quite interesting, but the first one was much, much better!) I''ll play Myst.

I was about 9 the last time I played. I never figured out what to do past a certain part. I think I should be able to get it now.
