Then i''ve got a question (and maybe it''s stupid one),..... If you make a game (or whatever) in a pirated development package ( such as MS Visual Studio, Borland C++, etc) is the sourcecode of the application still legally yours?

I''d say that if it ever comes to that question (i.e. whether the sourcecode is legally yours), you''re in so deep that it probably matters very little what the outcome of that question is.

So, if you''re getting a lot of exposure with something, make sure that your development environment is legal!

People might not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.

Yes, the source code is yours. But, if you make a hugely successful game, then the compiler maker *could* sue you for damages proportional to the success of your product.

Still, why do you care about *your* intellectual property (your source) when you don''t care about someone elses (the compiler maker)?

To the original poster: if you don''t care that a certain group (poor kids?) pirates your software, then change the licensing so that''s it not piracy. *You* may not care, but you would be encouraging them (or at the very least, facilitating) to break the law, and that''s not right.

Take care,
Bill

ActiveX is free and Paint utilities, C-kompiler, and 3D tools can be found free or pirated (You can always pay for it when you get rich later).

While I agreed with a lot of your post, this was alarming. Please reference another thread I just started in this forum about software piracy.

InnocuousFox,

Where did that thread on piracy go? I''d just posted and was looking for feedback, but the thread is nowhere to be found. Was it locked, snipped, removed, or did it just fall off the face of the earth? Or is it some error on my end? Thanks, anyone who can answer, for doing so!

For a bit, it was in the Lounge. Then (as I was posting something to it this morning) it moved somewhere else. Some place about a "Hasbro Copyright".

hey Krez, it''s me again, what''s wrong with pot?
Although, to be honest, I''ve never actually smoked it
but no one ever overdoses on it and certainly more people
have died because of cigarettes and alcohol, even when
considered separately.

I agree with the original post except for the piracy.
Buy a great and powerful computer and absolutely everything
I use is free. If it''s not free then start a project over
at sourceforge and you''ll eventually get something.
Even projects with people spread over the world can be
managed with Yahoo! Groups.
... and some people come home sit their ass in front of a computer and bitch about pot smokers on a game development site rather than actually develop.

I have nothing against pot. Personally i think that if you''re going to do drugs: plan ahead and use something that actually kicks in, like acid or mushrooms.

About the last post, "people who complain". Actually I am working daily on a project but I would have come twice as far if my time wasn''t wasted on whipping pot-smoking designers and doing their jobs too.

nothing, except that it always disappears so fast...
but i never heard the term "potpuffers" before, and it... um... tickled my fancy?
heh heh, that''s why i said that was the only thing that made this post worth it.
