violence in games...

I think violence is just weak intellectually. If this were purely a gaming forum I wouldn''t say that, but since it''s a game *development/design* forum I want to put that challenge out there. At its heart, violent content is pretty much the opposite of creativity, and it is the creative opportunities made possible by virtual worlds (and all games are virtual worlds) that really excites me.

I personally want to see the line between gaming and programming blur, and violience in games is slowing that process because it lures everyone from beginners to the most talented programmers away from more intellectually challenging activies. More importantly, the programmer time that goes into violent games is not being put into things like creative ways of _building_ objects in 3D worlds.

That said, violent/descructive content does play an important role which I''m not quite sure how to articulate, but it has to be balanced better with creative content. I''d like to see more games that are about doing things like building virtual robots which then compete at some game involving a ball or something. Maybe I''m just a dork, but I also wish there were console games that allowed you to do nothing but watch/explore (modify?) sorting algorithms or dictionary data structures. Why aren''t there more "games" that show me the relationship between OpenGL code and what it does in a compelling, interactive, dynamic 3D world (as cool as OpenGL books are, they not not interactive, dynamic, or 3D, and it is a strech to say that they are compelling).

Anyway, don''t tell me that this stuff is too hard to do, because I''ve got a CS major and I''m starting to work on implementing stuff like that...

Actually it takes quite a bit of creativity to come up with new ways to kill people. It takes some very good art skills to depict it visually. It''s takes some good design skills to make it fun and some really good coding skills to make it work.

Sure all that skill could be used to make something more indepth but we''ve got deadlines to meet.

I see violent games as a virtual punching bag. I also find virtual violence amusing at times. Why? Because it''s not real and I''m fully aware of that.

The developers can do whatever they want. It''s their right to express themselves in any way. And if that right helps, then make a buck then good for them. That''s what it''s for. Next you''ll be complaining that books are too violent. You''ve just got a very skewed view of the bookshelf.

I see plenty of non violent games available. I have no complaints.

Ahahahahahahahha.....ah you guys (and everyone else) crack me up big time! Violence in games to much for you? WHO THE HELL CARES?!?! Don''t you people understand that it is just a game?? Apparently not. You all need to get your heads outa your asses and learn some stuff. My advice to you would be to tuck your head between your legs and stimulate yourselves and keep your damn mouths shut!

The More Violent they Are ... the more popular they are (if its no so it could be that the Engine is not the best or the gameplay SUX)

Wiked Gamer, please refrain from talking with your mouth full.
Okay, violence in video games is fine.
I play violent games all the time but i dont hack up my neighbors.
if i play wolf3d i am shooting nazis so i dont die in the game.
the whole concept of violence in video games comes from self preservation.

now ill admit, it do like to shoot civilians, and you probably all think that i get some sick pleasure out of it, but i do this because i dont have anything left to shoot in the game.

violence is fun, and its a choice, if the game is too violent, dont play it

I just want to know on thing. Does anyone here also find real life violence fun? If you know that the person, the pain and the death is real, would any of you still find it fun?

What kind of question is that?

You think that because a lot of us get a kick out of killing pixels some of us might think killing real people is fun?
