Hey fellow game devs, I'm a Mass Communication student in my final year. This research is based on 'Ethics in the Gaming Industry'.

During the past decade, gaming has been one of the fastest-growing industries and so has the deteriorating work culture. The gaming industry has a reputation for being one of the most challenging to work in among all technological sectors. Employees in this industry are known for working long hours for less pay, having job insecurity, being subjected to workplace abuse, and receiving less authority than male employees. Research in this thesis examines work culture in the gaming industry and ways to bring about change using mass media in this industry.

This research is part of my final-year thesis. I would like the majority of people working in the gaming industry to contribute to this research by participating in this survey. The survey consists of questions that seek to understand more about the various challenges faced by people employed in the gaming industry. Note that people who have previously worked in the gaming industry and have shifted to another career can also take part in this survey.

You can also be assured that I will not reveal your identity (as I will not collect any emails) and I will only use your data for this research as a sample.

I look forward to hearing about your valuable experiences that will serve as a foundation for this research.

Moreover, any advice on how this research can be improved as well as some possible future challenges that employees in the gaming industry can expect would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I would like to respectfully request you to fill out the Google form and only provide advice/suggestions in this thread.

@fleabay Sir, I am just trying to complete a research project. I have posted this survey on Reddit and Facebook too but it's getting removed by mods. I have no clue how to collect data because the topic I have chosen for the research includes participation from game developers working in the industry. And, I don't know anyone personally who is working in the industry. This is the reason why I posted it here because I thought forums would be a perfect place to get responses from.

If this post is irrelevant to this forum I can remove it.

Maybe you should have thought about that before you picked the subject an topic?

I don't mean to be mean, but you essentially set yourself up for failure.

You are trying to research an industry that you have no connections or "in" with.

That's like getting behind the wheel without a license or any driving education, and expecting the car to move and take you to school.. I mean maybe one day soon with self driving, but you see?

That's like expecting a child to swim without any training.

I'd recommend changing your research Thesis to a population that you actually have access to.

I did research before, and I chose my gaming guild as subjects, as I had access.

I also did research on the job of a โ€œproducerโ€, and I had 2 other people who were going to work with me on it, but they were skeptical if I was able to get in contact with the SMEs, I assured them, but they ultimately chose to do their own thing, and I did the research by myself.

Expecting strangers to open up about their problems is a challenging thing, you need an โ€œinโ€.

Also your basically asking us to talk shit about our industry.

Yes, there are concerns,, but everyone makes sacrifices for what they love, this industry is a perfect example.

How far are we willing to go is the more interesting question.

There is also several levels of game dev from modding to indie to AA to AAA, with unique challenges.

Most of what you mention are AAA abuses.

Although concerning, they literally have millions if not billions riding on the successful timely release of their products., what is a little ethic bending at that cost?

So, I just looked at the Survey.

You ask for a lot of personal identifiable information.

Also, all the check marks could be seen from time to time.

Furthermore, you ask for changes to the industry, why? It's usually only important to ask for change if you have the ability to do something.

From my experience, change MUST come from top down.

I don't quite see how โ€œMass communicationsโ€ directly applies.

Video games is not exactly mass com for one simple reason, it's an interactive medium.

Whomever signed off on your research Thesis likely didn't know enough about the industry to say no.

If I was reviewing your thesis topic, I'd recommend narrowing your focus to Public relations effectiveness. Now that would be an interesting topic,

What mode of media is best or most effective in the games industry?

What demographics respond to which forms of mass comm?

Figure it out.

If you don't, you'll shoot yourself in the foot, and be unable to finish your education, for the simple reason of you trying to merge your interests in the wrong way.

I'm also not taking your survey because:

  1. I'm not in AAA
  2. for principle to get you to go back to the drawing board.

Best of luck!

I note that the survey is now closed.

"Ethics in the Gaming Industry (Research Paper) The form Ethics in the Gaming Industry (Research Paper) is no longer accepting responses.
Try contacting the owner of the form if you think that this is a mistake."

This was fun, Harsh8! Y'all come back, y'hear?

He probably understood our perspectives and went back to the drawing board.
