gLTF 2.0 does not have subsurface scattering. Why?

A gLTF extension was proposed for subsurface scattering. But it looks like it got generalized into some kind of volumetric reflection, which is more complicated and probably hard to render. That didn't go into the gLTF 2.0 spec.

What's current thinking on how to do good human skin in gLTF 2.0?
