Splatoon - Paint Physics

Splatoon is awesome because you can swim in the paint and up walls but how would Nintendo implement the paint? Would it be objects for each splotch of paint? Is there an algorithm to merge the splotches? Has anyone ever tried something like this? I'm asking because I'm thinking of adding a hedge apple gun in my game that shoots out rotting hedge apples to make slime to trap opponents.
