Constraint is the name of the game for my own primum opus. After so many of my ideas have spiraled out of even my ability to imagine that I could accomplish them, I sat down and laid out for myself a project that focuses on doing only a few things AND NOTHING ELSE. Additionally, I'm constraining myself to doing only things that have been done before because I need to learn before I can invent. Granted, I'll still have a fresh gimmick for the final product (high-level vision is a strong-suit of mine).
As for what keeps me working on this... being born with a sense of purpose really helps, but that also means that I can't give advice for "achieving" that.

A good motivator for me typically when trying to finish a project, and this applies to anything that I've started really, not just software development is the end product. After investing so much time into a project, it only feels right when you're completely done.
Especially if you're a person who has multiple projects going at the same time. Freeing up some space in your head as well as on your system and the fact that I'll be able to put it behind me is a enough to give me that extra boost.
