Looking for Game Native Level Editors on PC

Hi, this is my first post. I have read the posting rules and I believe this is the correct forum section to ask for help with my search, if it isn't then I apologise.

I'm currently a post-grad Games Design student and mostly use UE4 and GMS for development. Both are fantastic environments to work in but I'm looking for something I can do level designs in very quickly without having to think about programming anything. Specifically I'd like to find a game with Local multiplayer on PC which comes with a fairly accessible Level/Map editor, the purpose being that I can build a few maps in my spare time, invite friends over, play them and then get feedback to inform my design sensibilities. I'm not too bothered about what genre of game it is as I believe there's always something useful to learn.

So far I've found Battleblock Theatre which I'll purchase as it seems to have a strong community and popularity on it's side.

Game Requirements are:

- PC Compatible

- Map/Level Editor

- Couch Multiplayer (2-4 player)

- Controller Support (or at least a workaround)

Thanks for reading :)

If you're used to UE4, you could maybe get into making levels for one of the Unreal Tournament games. Maybe you could contribute something to UT4? IMO, good level design is going to involve some amount of scripting, so I don't know that I'd call it a good idea to avoid having to do some small amount of scripting.

odds are you'll find controller and couch multiplayer rare in pc titles. maybe console ports.

It isn't exactly rare, just doesn't have a large level of success adding benefit. Most of the time local multiplayer is not as good for PC as console.

I agree with TedEH map editing for UT4 might be a good fit for you. If not you could try older games like the older unreal tournaments' or quake3.

Couch co-op with controllers they aren't, but Blizzard's RTS titles have a long history of fantastic level editors (and 2-4 person multiplayer).

The entire MOBA genre was born out of the WarCraft 3 map editor, and the StarCraft 2 editor expanded on those capabilities significantly.

May be worth leaving out the controller requirement, and having everyone bring round a laptop instead...

Hi, thanks for the replies everyone. Creating levels for UT4 is certainly something I intend to do in the near future as UE4 is where I'm dedicating my course projects. When it comes to designing for UT4 I'd prefer to give it my full focus whereas my search is more toward breezing polished levels out in an evening.

My search for couch multiplayer PC titles found Speedrunners which has an Editor in Beta, Trials Evolution, and Battleblock Theatre. I had expected there to be quite a few titles to choose from in the fps or racing genre, but for whatever reasons, PC's aren't granted many splitscreen titles.

A polished level in an evening sounds a little to optimistic to be honest.
