A lot of incite here. This cropped up cause someone stepped on something and got their foot hurt. At least I hope it's not the smelly socks thing.
Footware at work
Yeah, just get some slippers/loafers/sandals -- something with a rubber sole though; I don't think I'd like using communal bathroom facilities with a foam or cloth foot-bottom, not to mention subsequently tracking it all over the office. Something comfy, easy on/off, and suitable for indoor/outdoor use is probably a good place to start.

Yeah got some of those slippers that look like big fluffy bunny rabbits. If the rules change to stop fluffy slippers then you know somebody is out to get you.

It's unicorns for me. Seems like taking off shoes and walking around on socks is very common at our office, but I guess it really does depend on the company.
I gets all your texture budgets!
Shoes are pretty optional at work. Not uncommon to see people bare foot in the office though. I can see it as being a safety thing to wear shoes but some people in game development aren't always keen on taking frequent showers.
When I worked in corporate software, I got told off for wearing thongs ("flip flops"), as apparently it's a breach of workplace safety laws, and leaves them open to a lawsuit if I hurt my toes, or whatever...
In games software, it's common for people to be shoeless and not get told off

Most places I've worked there are people (including me) who will slip off their shoes while sitting at their desk. Even as I type this my shoes are slipped off, easily put back on. As long as your feet and shoes don't have an offensive odor this shouldn't be an issue.
I have known people who wear flip-flops who take them off occasionally, but for safety I wouldn't do it.
I've got a sibling who does insurance audits and I've seen first-hand some stories of workplace foot accidents. Nasty business. I can absolutely understand a business writing up a policy about wearing footwear at all times for legal reasons.
When someone gets their bare foot shredded open because a nailhead slightly popped out of a floor some afternoon with the building settling, the company and the company's insurance can point to the official policy and say "We're sorry you cannot walk for the next six weeks, but you violated the written policy so don't bother suing."
