Where can I get sprites and backgrounds?

Hi guys, I''m writing a game just for learning purposes but I would still like it to look nice. It''s basically a sideways scrolling shoot-em-up and I need some sprites for spaceships, baddies (the usual). Does anybody know where I might be able to get some royalty free sprites? I''d appreciate any links... Cheers

I think a lot of us are in the exact same position..

There is SpriteLib (just do a search on google for it, you''ll find it) but I''m not sure there is anything like spaceships in that collection.

AFAIK it''s the only royalty free sprite library on the net. There used to be another one hosted by vbexplorer.com (it had no spaceships anyway, just power ranger like characters and some backgrounds), but it seems to be gone.

So, I can''t help, sorry, I just thought I''d give you a hint.

Good luck.

Thanks for that - I''ve actually already seen the spritelib that you mention (I think - the one from spriteworks.com?)

I guess I''ll have to keep looking.

Tip for good artist - you would have a lot of friends for a little bit of work in creating some nice sprites.

Yeah, I am in exactly the same situation, want to code my second game, but am too lazy to create my own sprites (not to mention the fact I cant draw!). Both SpriteLib and SpriteWorks want money for thier 2000 sprites, 1999 of them I probably wont use, so if anyone knows where I can get my hands on some FREE sprites let me know (All I really need is an explosion anim actually).
