don't get too comfortable

But because they also change the size of the start menu or the colour of the start menu

or change the start menu into an entire screen, with moving animated ADVERTS

Can you imagine adverts and spam in a virtual reality world? oh hellll no.

I work with the Oculus almost every day and, while it's far from perfect, I'm pretty sold on it. At worst, I like to think of it not as some fundamental shift into "virtual reality" but instead as just a very nice screen (which seems appropriate, because a lot of early 3D demos were themselves touted as "virtual reality" despite rendering to a 2D monitor screen). I expect it is here to stay because, unlike, say, 3D movies, I'd have a hard time finding situations where, all other things being equal, not wearing the Oculus would be better than wearing it. That said, I've also definitely won the motion sickness lottery, in that I don't get motion sickness at all with the DK2 or any other 3D/virtual reality display.

As for VR headsets; Elite is basically the only game right now I can see myself buying one for...

I recently got a DK2 out of sheer curiosity.

I tried it with Elite. Text readability is EXTREMELY bad. Galaxy and System map UIs don't work properly. Most objects are so far away you don't get proper 3D effect with them. The only things I liked were: 1) The 3D radar is actually full 3D, making it much easier to discern radar blips that are forward-and-below vs behind-and-above. 2) The head tracking is useful in dogfighting and doesn't make me motion-sick.

I tried it with Trackmania 2 Stadium: It's a slightly better experience, but the UI overlay is still terrible and unreadable on servers with a custom UI (which is all of them). I also got severely motion sick every time I turned my head at all (which is odd considering I didn't get sick at all in Elite), effectively making the head tracking aspect useless in that game.

I couldn't get it working at all with TF2, possibly due to my strange multiple-monitor configuration or driver conflicts. I tried a random first person horror demo and it made me motion sick in less than a minute.

There are also random issues with the headset, such as fogging up or having the lenses bump my greasy forehead when I put it on that smudges the lenses.

I could definitely see VR headsets being useful once they have about 8x the resolution they have now (I have a feeling even 4K is not going to cut it) and come with built-in Dramamine injectors / barf bags.

Try changing the HUD colour to green. It actually helps.

Yeah. It's slightly better but still not good enough for general gameplay. The color matrix also affects the colors of all other UI elements (such as enemy, friendly, enemy-targeted-by-friendly colors), unfortunately.

Hopefully the developers will eventually allow customization of the HUD's primary orange color independently of all the other colors.

They should just sell them with a bag of ginger cookies :) That'd sort it.

I love playing Star Conflict with my DK2 smile.png Tried Elite, but had problems getting high and even enough framerate.

With SC I can get a solid 75fps always. (Its also a much simpler game)

In general, I find "cockpit" style works best when you sit in your chair at home, and if first person, please don't require me to look up or down for too long time..

Framerate is extremly important for a good experience, even a single framedrop is nausea-inducing.

The longest I've been "in the rift" now is about 8 hours, with just smaller breaks for bio, and a bit of breaks when queuing for new games.

That did produce a bit of disorientation, but not too bad.

There is a bit of getting used to it though, in the beginning I had a much harder time to keep it on for a long time.

But our brains are amazing, they can adapt.

I think VRs biggest threat right now is decision makers not realizing the importance of high framerate.

You absolutely really no discussion MUST reach solid 75+ fps. Really. Always. No hickups.

Don't even think about letting fps go low, for even a fraction of a second.

If you think about making something VR, and don't believe me, please do something else and forget about VR.

Reduce graphics, simplify levels, remove entire sections of the game, anything but letting the fps slide.

Please don't destroy VRs chance to actually become a reality now, without everyone having to wait 20 more years for consumers to forget about the fail.

If we have to wait 2-3 years more, that is ok, but don't rush the products....

This. So much this. And considering how many developers are willing to drop to 30 for a "more cinematic experience" and claiming "the human eye can't tell the difference" rather than sacrifice that SSAO that makes those static screenshots pop... it's going to be a while.

Yeah, 30fps is actually tolerable for some games on a big TV, but VR really needs the framerate.

I'm really hoping VR gets popular. If it does, it will generate more of a demand for high framerate GPUs and subsequently, we might see the entire market shift towards higher end GPUs.

The current console generation are not going to come close to it though.
