SoTL was correct, there are three conditionals in english

1- alternative future

If is then will be

2- alternative present

If were then would be

3 - alternative past

if had been then would have been

op is saying a condition of what can happen in future (fish doing intelectual work) if there is certain condition true (the better way- fish showers implemented).
