Proof that what we do can inspire others:

from a recent email i received....

"Hello,

Heard you were doing beta tests for the new version of Caveman. I played the Caveman demo back in the 1.3 days, but never could find a way to buy a retail copy because the Rockland Software site went down. Me and my buddy even modded the Caveman demo quite a bit with new textures and stuff. That's what got us both into game development, actually. I'd be really interested in beta testing the new version, the original was fantastic. Really a lot of good ideas in there, and it was ahead of it's time.
Please let me know if there's any openings."

That's really nice. Kudos man.

I had a similar one many years ago, I was sat in the pub opposite the office and this kid came in. Barely 18. I would have asked for ID before I gave him a beer smile.png

I noticed he was eye-balling me a lot and was trying to remember if I had thrown him out of a pub or something. After a while he came across and asked me if I had written FOFT, I admitted I had and he asked for my autograph (which felt really good!) then he went on to say he was writing a game at the moment and he really loved FOFT. My ego grew a lot!

Then he said he really admired the graphics Stevie had done and was basing his graphics on the same style.

Ego went down a lot.

Not my amazing coding talent, Steveie's graphics.

Oh well felt good for a few seconds

I get the feeling that writing plugins is a thankless hobby.

sometimes i still get fan mail 10 years after release!

but with me, game development is more than just a hobby, job, or career. its more like a passion / obsession / calling. I'd almost rather build them than play them. Guess that's why i was always the DM back in the day, everybody always wanted to play in my world.
