Well the WiiU had a thread, the Xbox One has two threads. So it's only fair that Sony and the PS4 have their own thread.

With that said, any news on whether or not the PS4 is backwards-compatible with the PS3? I'm assuming it's not, but I wanted to be sure.

Any of course talk about anything PS4-related here.

from my understanding, they are going to use their newly acquired streaming service for that.(although i don't recall reading that in any official statements, so it just might be a rumor.)

No direct backwards compatibility. As slicer said, the current expectation is that Gaikai will enable PS3 gameplay in spring 2014. What would be nice is if I automatically get Gaikai access to PS3 games I own (potentially by putting the disc in?) but nothing much has been announced or even rumored as far as I know.

No backwards compatibly with PS1-PS3 games, because they changed to an x86-64 processor architecture. Basically, it would be like trying to run Windows programs on an old Mac still using a PowerPC processor. Really not gonna happen without emulation. :P

Though the Gaikai streaming service is an emulator, as far as I understand, so that's cool. Not too thrilled that you have to stream the games, but Sony is doing everything else pretty right so I'm willing to take it. :)

I'm curious if the ps4 is powerful enough to emulate the ps2 this time around.

I'd be surprised if it can't. Although, if Gaikai is streaming emulated games, I guess we'll never know the answer to that question.

I wonder if PS4 will have Linux?

I would imagine there will be several older PS games available through Gaikai. It would be silly for them to only have PS3 games available. tongue.png

Also, what do people think of the potential PS+ layout? I think it's quite beautiful, I'm always a sucker for good interface design!

Gaikai is not an emulator. It streams videos, send inputs to server, and sends back the result.

Oh, ok. I misunderstood something somewhere else, then. I thought Gaikai was an online-emulator in the likes of Console Classix.

It's not a matter of simply power. The support for PS2 would also need to be built into the OS (and would probably require extra circuitry and chips on the motherboard), increasing the cost.
