I know someone who has published a few books and she put me into touch with Addison-Wesley Professional.
Technically “starting your career” is a form of career advancement, but I really meant what to do once you are already in the industry (not that you can’t make contacts prior to getting in either—just that once you are in contacts will be your best bet for further advancement).
That being said, I don’t have a degree, and in fact dropped out of high school.
Also it wasn’t very clear what you meant, but I guess you are saying the best part of a degree is that it helps you make contacts (such as on campus, through events, etc.)? In that case sure. I would also consider that one of the biggest boons to getting a degree.

High school- yuck. I have a diploma and a degree, but I'm self employed so I need neither as my boss has never demanded to scrutinize my credentials.
