What would you make armour out of?

"fertilizer" armor: As soon as you stop moving, grass grows over you rendering you indistinguishable from your surroundings. When you're not standing still, you stink of "fertilizer", which makes your enemies kinda not want to be anywhere near you.
Ballista armor: A metal armor with a bunch of tiny ballista on it that shoot at nearby enemies and projectiles. It's lousy at protecting you, but it can shoot incoming arrows off trajectory and pelts enemies.
Marionette armor: Each part of armor has a bar balanced on it that extends to the left and right, and holds up an identical set of armor on either side. Wearing a full set of this armor makes it look like there are 3 of you that move in a synchronized way, except 2 are fake.
Sexy armor: Nobody wants to hit you because you're just so damn fine.
Fat-suit: Wear armor that makes you look several times larger than you are. The majority of attacks against you will do no damage whatsoever, as they just shove some of the suit aside, effectively resulting in a miss.
Tattoos
might make an interesting game mechanic in that you can collect magic
tattoos which have a permanent effect. I can't think of any games which
do this
Not exactly what you mean, but magical tatoos are actually an armor in GW1:

They're just worn/treated like regular armor though, so nothing special.
This is just weird to me. You can't just put tattoos on and off. At least, non-magical characters can't.
Visuals
can be a useful thing to consider. It would be nice to have (at least)
one silver armor, one gold armor, one red/copper armor, one blue armor,
one black armor, and one white armor (per armor class). Green, purple,
and other colors can be used either as their own armors or as an accent
to distinguish between two armors with the same base color (for example
black/purple armor vs. black/green armor).
Absolutely! Colours are my primary inspiration for the latter armours - Ideally a lot of the higher level armours will be roughly equivalent, so it's about what the player thinks looks coolest on their character. From my list, there's a nice selection of steels, each with their own hues, and there's plenty of scope for light colours, green leaf armour, orange igneous armour, silvery mithril, golden and bronzey adamant, blue coral, and plenty of dark ones as well.
Cute kittens taught to stare the enemy in the eyes, duh.
What? Are you in the wrong thread?

See Aphotic armour - the word aphotic just means dark (a-photic: without photons?)

And here I thought you said:
and feel free to suspend disbelief
:D

Referencing Guild Wars again, you could actually color your armor in GW1, and now in GW2 as well. I've always thought it was a nice touch, but I still believe certain things - like metallic parts - should not be color-able, and only fabric or leather parts should - you know, things that can actually absorb color. Anyway, suspension of disbelief says that giving the ability to color everything is acceptable. One article they published is here: http://www.arena.net/blog/live-and-let-dye-kristen-perry-on-the-gw2-dye-system

is it indestructible?

actually, metals can be colored, the only down side is that the color wear off with use, as it's a thin cover...
Paper armor did exsist in Asia. However it was very very tightly compressed paper that was lacquered every layer, and depending on the culture with leather as well.
However often times it was used as a ceremonial armor, that was functional in the sense that it stopped arrows, was warm, and was really light.
Steel-weave armor - This armor is made of thousands of strands of steel that has been tightly woven to give some flexibility and air-flow to the wearer as opposed to traditional plate armors. The armor would look like the musculature of a human being with no skin, but with thin metallic strands in place of muscle fibers.... I just think it would look cool

Ghost armour - makes you incorporeal. Totally useless against anything that's already incorporeal or weapons designed to hit ghosts. Those tattoos might come in handy at that point.
Sun armour - Woven from light. Enemies attacking you are blinded, increasing their chance to miss. Could burn them on hits. Optional special ability to occasionally flare the armour and deal damage to everyone around you.
Natures Sacrifice Armour - The armour spawns (or summons) small creatures and birds that constantly circle you, sacrificing their lives to save you from attacks. Animals spawn over time, so enemies can wear away your defences if they can keep attacking. Optional special ability to spawn cute kittens for the kitten eye attack (will save negates).
