I read another thread asking about what free engines there are out there. and now I ask: What do you think of using a free engine (such as crystal space and the like) instead of rolling your own? Do you get the whole "just not right" thing, or is it barable? And who here has used a free engine in their game, and what did they think? - Andrew PS: Wav, I hope this is not too off topic for your liking PPS: Wav: so as not to resurect the thread concerning it, congrats with getting moderator. Another server has gone!
To me, it wouldn''t feel right. I want to create a game, not change someone elses program

IMO, as long as the engine doesn''t restrict what you want to graphically, using someone else''s engine is fine. For me, I don''t want to spend 6 months-year just getting a working engine going. I would rather get to the meat of the game.

I''m using the free Nebula engine, and I would say that it''s pretty open as far as what I can do w/ it and I don''t have to spend months making a diverse engine that will run on DX or OGL plus have a really nice design. Nebula is consequently more compex than some engines since it''s more diverse I think.

Also I used Panard 3D and it is quite a nice engine as well.

Naz : You say you don''t want to spend X amount of time creating an engine, yet how long will it take you to learn an alien engine well enough to use it as fluently as if you programmed it yourself?

If you''re using a 3D perspective, then I think there are some good engines out there. But you can''t expect to be able to use them to their full advantage immediately.

Can someone link to some of these engine websites? =)
CrystalSpace
Genesis3D
Morfit
The Nebula Device

Ah thanks. Most of those seem to be 3D FPS engines though. I''m looking for something a little more.. isometric.
I don''t really know anything about programming so even these libraries or whatever don''t help me. Sucks when all the programmers I know are already working on a game =p
I suppose one could get by modding other games. Neverwinter Nights will definately keep me occupied for a very long time =)
Try Google. That''s a link to a Google search on "isometric game engine," so don''t ignore it.

Using search engines is a good idea when you''re looking for something (obvious, but not done enough).
CrystalSpace has specific support for isometric views. I would be surprised if the others mentioned didn''t have support for this. It should basically just be a camera option in a high-level API.

Acually, the things that are in Nebula already I got working really quickly with help from other users of course. The things I have had to add/change in Nebula are things that I would have had to implement from scratch and that are fairly seperate from the engine or that were pretty easy to modify.

Nebula rules, it''s powerful, and it has what I''m looking for for graphics. You''re not locked into using First person or using .bsp files. It''s made to handle open areas well. But it''s just my opinon
