Angel mode ?

Most of you have probably seen at least one of those silly US movies, it's basically a trope now, usually Christmas-themed, where someone wants to commit suicide, but an "angel" appears, and magically shows the protagonist what the world would be like with him never been born.

Now, when you finish a game of Civ, you see a map, that retrospectively tracks the progress of all players. A city founded there, territory captured here, player eliminated over there. What if you had an "Angel mode", where you could see how it would have been like, how the situation would resolve itself, if you didnt actually play ?

In a game of Civ it wouldnt be a very interesting feature, but imagine a strategy game that tracks the chronicles of a major conflict, of which you are only a small part of. When you start the game - the war is already raging, and you can exploit it or try to stop it. Let's say you tried to stop it, but failed. And after the game over screen you are shown a map, where in Civ-fashion your achievements are shown. This city was not captured only because you were there, this elite platoon was defeted only because of your involvement, etc. But there is a button that will switch the map to show what would have happened if you didnt exist, how the war would play out. Maybe the agressor swiftly overruns your nation's castles, or maybe he is repelled, or maybe even, that without you - peace was achieved.
I'm thinking that such a thing might give the player a better feel for his role and involvement level within the story. For the game universe to become a more personalized experience. It would be very much like, in Fallout, the ending listed every single town you've been in and how it affected them.
That would be quite cool, although maybe hard to do. Depends if you want to do it by simulating from a certain point to find out, or just as a static story element which is the same for everyone.
