Are there any reliable sites/blogs for looking into a more in-depth view of metrics pertaining to games, types of games that have been downloaded or purchased?

How reliable do you need? What are your accuracy and precision requirements? What is your budget for the data?

Most businesses (correctly) collect and protect the data. It is valuable to the company in planning, and in the hands of competitors can be detrimental.

There are free sites like vgchartz.com. The numbers are moderately accurate and rather imprecise. They often don't accurately represent actual numbers, but are reasonably good for generalities. Valve has some basic stats on Steam you can view publicly about specific games. If you are looking for different markets (such as facebook) then you'll need to find a similar website that tracks it.

Others sources like NPD provide more targeted research that is generally more accurate and precise, but costs a pretty penny. You can commission your own market research and get very accurate results for your specific needs, but be prepared for the cost.
