The OP's post isnt about prefering indie games by GDNet members, its about supporting and encouraging your fellow GDNet community members, I said I dont need a pact cause I would do it regardless, if you dont want to you dont have to, but I think its a good idea to promote

I really dont understand why this idea bothers people, "How dare he say that we should support and encourage our community!?!?" that sounds ridiculous...

I do support and encourage this community. I support it by supplying help when I can, and I encourage people to make their games or engines or whatever. But to propose we promise to buy any game someone makes just because the person has been here for a certain amount of time? It's stupid.

It doesn't bother me that he said it, he's free to suggest whatever ideas he may have. And I'm free to tell him why his idea is a bad one.

Don't misrepresent me. That's not what I said. The time limit thing was so that people don't just jump in here advertise their game then be gone the next day. In other words, joining just to peddle their game.

[Edit] Tho maybe the 18 month rule is a bit to long, I dont think its a bad idea, if someone was creating an indie game and decided to join GameDev just to promote the day after, they haven't really been a part of the community.

Many of the gamedev members you've seen have at one time or another helped eachother out, via answering questions to forum post outside of the GDNet Lounge, the longer they been here the more they probably contributed positively to the community, so why not extend a helping hand to those active community member that during his/her spare time created a game that he/she just wants to see people to playing.

You on the other hand have completely got my point, spot on. 18 months was arbitrary, but you obviously you got the point.

Again, this was just an idea.

I predict that this is a zero-sum game.

User A makes game X, user B buys game X; user B makes game Y, user C buys game Y; user C makes game Z, user A buys game Z.

Poof - no money changes hands.

Therefore, we could potentially claim that we already do this, we just haven't formalized it :-P

What I would like, instead of this idea, would be some exposure for indie games in general - something like "Staff's Choice" or something that can be put in the oh-so-crowded frontpage. Kinda the same idea as Featured Journals, except for games. :D

I'm pretty sure this has been brought to the table before and was greeted warmly by the staff, but it just isn't implemented yet. I think it was going to be rolled out with their marketplace thing they were making?

I'm very interested in this implicit approach, looks fairly more efficient. Or perhaps not?

Yes, putting games somewhere on the forums is a splendid idea. And allowing those that have played it to review.

I'm suprised the marketplace is so empty (last time I checked it at least). There would need to be a space untouched my member's hands that only mods and admins could post in -- that way it would be clean, well formatted and properly highlighted.

On the other hand, we can't expect to bother people who have their own affairs with advertising our work -- As it is now, even your announcments doen't have many game titles that actually have feedback.

Perhaps... Perhaps creating a point system for reviewers would be good? As in -- you post your game in, f.e., Your Announcments. Someone plays it and posts a robust, indepth review. You, as the game author/poster, give him credit for that in the form of a review point. Not sure if those would be actually useable to anyone, apart from giving a "Great reviewer" badge next to your members icon. Or maybe?

I think we just need more exposure on the forums for new releases.

Personally I would like to see a "Weekly Releases" Section of the site, a "User Choice of the Month" section, and a "Staff Picks" section.

Maybe even a cycling banner ad as part of the forums to get more exposure to new games.

We had the GDNet Showcase for a while back on the old site, which was really sort of intended to help people show off their work. I believe there were some ideas kicked around for making it a bit more robust (e.g. linking to commercial titles one has worked on, etc.) but unfortunately I have no idea what the status of all that is.
