How do I line up sprites properly when drawing them and create sheets?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for tips on creating sprites. My artist will be drawing them in Photoshop and I'd like to know ideas on how to get everything properly oriented and put into sheets.

Is a program like Sprite Sheet Packer the way to go? Do you just use image layers to get the sprites properly positioned for playing the animation within the game? Meaning, how do I make sure the sprite is positioned right from one image to the next so that it doesn't jerk sideways or become misaligned in the sequence?

I'll appreciate hearing any tips you have on this process. Thanks!
I'd just bring them all into Photoshop and lower the opacity on the layers. then line them up and use the crop tool to size them all together.
