What Kinds of Music do Most Developers Look For?
I'm trying to expand my portfolio to include a lot of styles of music, so that I can compose for more types of games. Are there any recommendations as to what I should include?
Music that loops - everyone who wants to do sound for games needs to have a few examples of a short piece that loops seamlessly.
I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
While seamless looping files are certainly important, many clients are far more interested in how "implementable" your music content is. For example, can you create a system where you have various cues (i.e. ambient, combat-intro, combat-tense, combat-super-tense, combat-won, combat-lost,) where it all comes of musical while being functional?
There's no magic combo of genres that developers are looking for because there is such a wide range of games being produced. I've heard polka music, hip hop, orchestral, country, jazz, techno, rock and everything in between in games. Find the genres you're REALLY good at, because very few can be masters of all of them, and focus on showcasing those genres.
Thanks!
Nate
