simple UV mapper

Hello.
I've been searching for a simple UV mapping tool in the last three days but I can't find one. I'm interested primarily in non-organic 3D unwrapping. I'd prefer it to be free, simple yet reliable and to know a few things like symmetry, unwrapping modes to include plain uncomputed unfolding. Currently I have a simple tank hull and I marked the seams to split and I simply want the unmarked edges to be used in "uncreasing" the resulting mesh. Think of it like I'd have a paper box and I merely unfold it. I could as well rotate the polygons to get it to a single plane but it's cumbersome.
I've tried UVLayout which seems pretty complex but it's so entangled and not friendly. Also trried Roadkill (lacks simple unfolding) Deep UV (don't know how to select the cutting edges, no tutorials, no explanations not even in help) Wings, Silo and I don't recall how many others. The last 2 simply don't unfold as I want (as I cut). One half is done well while the other (symmetrical) is messed up.
A very good example of what I want is http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/stevenr/unwrap_uvs_tool_update_an_interactive_tool_for_automatically_unwrapping_uvs (just look at the screenshot and you'll understand). But It's not stand alone...
