No need to drill holes in your head if your looking for a way to get direct digital <-> neural interface.. The human eyes are probably the highest bandwidth sensory channel in the human body.. they are close to the brain and heavily myelinated..

Only problem is they dump their input directly into the visual cortex which prefilters them into what we perceive to be "visual" stimulus.. However that is not a problem, the latest research in neural research shows that regions of the brain can be disrupted using short pulses of magnetic flux.. so if you shutdown the visual cortex and then feed the eyes raw digital information i bet that stuff will get to the neo-cotex and then the real "magic" happens..

Now you need a way to read out neural output.. lucky we also have a commercially available technology (Emotiv EEG headset), though somewhat limited but with enough processing you can probably extract the needed signals.. That should complete the information loop from machine <-> mind..

It's only a matter of time until someone does this..

Enjoy!

Would LSD not help to reroute inputs, so that you could use your nose to see your environment?

probably

Optic nerves would only be good for input. Going through the spinal cord would be the second best option though it is still not the best.

The best option to either of these would be nano bots that bind to the neurons in the brain. The only way to actually build the nano bots would be to genetically engineer a virus but the main missing component would be a radio transmitter/receiver since there are no organisms that I know of which have the ability to transmit or receive radio waves...

During embryonal development, the eye is formed from the brain, so if one was being pedantic, one could even say "eyes are part of the brain". :-)
I already found a way to feed digital information to my brain with the aid of my eyes. I'm looking at it now. ;)

I live I will have telepathic powers!

One of my best friends is doing brain-computer interfacing research in conjunction with the European Space Agency and.. you will not end up with telepathic powers or even anything resembling telepathic powers.

Still, telepathy would be one of the 'easiest' things to achieve once an appropriate cognitive connection has been established. Rather than, say, telekinesis or similar, which would either be impossible or would require a significant amount of external devices to work.

Besides a BCI that the brain could consciously access (that's obviously the hard part !), all you'd need for telepathy would be a wireless transceiver. Or maybe just route it over existing wireless data networks.

Well, does the Emotiv Epoc "move the cube" demo count as telekinesis?

True - if you could translate brainwaves to soemthing that can be fed to and understood by another persons brain, then telepathy would be pretty simple.
The emotiv is a useless toy. There is too much distortion trying to read brain waves through the skull...
