You have to start somewhere and anything you can learn from college you can also learn from books or the internet...

You don't want to learn though you want to create new technologies. The latest information is in published journals which you typically need to pay a lot of money for. Unless you go to a university which pays for access for you. Also, if you worked for a world-class research university you would have access to the latest and greatest tech along with other very intelligent minds to communicate and share information with. You may even be able to get people to fund your research directly instead of out-of-pocket.

As is you sound like the mad scientist equivalent of a guy that wants to make an MMO in his mom's basement.
